SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team returns to Liberty League play, heading north for the league crossover this weekend. The Thoroughbreds will face RIT and Union for a second time, this time at Clarkson, and will close the weekend out against Clarkson and St. Lawrence at St. Lawrence University.
The Thoroughbreds enter this weekend with a 2-2 record in the conference standings, sitting in fourth place. Last weekend, Skidmore opened its home portion of the schedule, going 1-2 against a tough field at the Skidmore Classic.
Sophomore setter
Bailey Hutchins had a tremendous weekend, racking up 24 kills (2.2 per set), 58 assists (5.3 per set), 35 digs (3.2 per set), seven serving aces (0.64 per set) and six total blocks (0.6 per set). In the tournament finale against Cortland on Saturday, Hutchings exploded for a triple double, recording 24 assists, 14 digs, and 12 kills. She also added four total blocks and four serving aces, all while hitting .440. Hutchins was named to the Skidmore Classic All-Tournament team, and was named to the Liberty League's honor roll this past Monday for her efforts.
SCOUTING RIT (13-9, 6-2 LL)
RIT comes into the matchup in second place in the conference standings, a game behind first-place Vassar. The Tigers have cooled a bit since their hot start, going 1-2 at the Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational, and dropping a five-set thriller to Nazareth on Wednesday.
Sarah Szybist is one of the toughest offensive threats in the nation. She is second in all of Division III with both 5.38 kills and 6.13 points per set. She is also in the top 50 nationally with 37 aces, tied with teammate Maria Simonetti.
RIT defeated Skidmore in three sets, the last time the teams played on Sept. 23. Marcela Familiar-Bolaños and
Allie Dillon each recorded 14 digs.
SCOUTING UNION (14-7, 1-3 LL)
Union returns to league play this weekend after winning the last four matches at the Utica Invitational. The Dutchwomen conceded just three sets total in the four matches, defeating Stevens in five, Plattsburgh in four, and sweeping Farmingdale State and Lasell. Morgan Clark is second in the Liberty League with an impressive .304 hitting percentage. Ally VanDoren leads the team with 3.84 points per set, 245 kills, and 31 service aces.
Skidmore defeated Union in five sets the last time these teams played, on Sept. 23.
Caite Canfield recorded a double-double with 14 kills and a game-high 28 digs.
SCOUTING CLARKSON (12-4, 3-1 LL)
Clarkson is uncharacteristically sitting in third place in the league standings coming into this game, but have only played four league matches, going 3-1. The five-time defending conference champions come into the weekend winning nine of the last 10 matches, including a sweep at the Golden Knight Invitational on Sept. 23-24.
Rachel Reusch leads the conference with a .310 hitting percentage. Rachel Aird leads the team with 4.02 points per set and 3.56 kills per set. Kate Isaksen paces the Golden Knights defense, as she's third in the league with 5.66 digs per set.
This is the first matchup this season between the two schools. Clarkson swept the season series in 2015.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE (14-7, 1-3 LL)
St. Lawrence is another team coming into this tournament strong, with a three-match sweep at the Canton Classic last weekend. The Saints are led by Masha Kolesnikova, who is sixth in the league with 3.02 kills per set. On defense, Amanda Teoppo has been stout, averaging an impressive one block per set.
This is the first matchup between the teams this season. The Saints swept the season series in the 2015 season.
