Skidmore falls to No. 15 Ithaca in Liberty League Semifinal

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team was swept (25-16, 25-21, 25-11) by Ithaca in a Liberty League Semifinal on Friday afternoon.
  • The Thoroughbreds, making their first semifinal appearance since 2017 and second since 2012, finish the season 16-10.
  • Ithaca (25-4) will play for its fourth consecutive league championship on Saturday against the winner of the other semifinal between Union and William Smith.
  • First-year Chloe Heitman led the Skidmore offense with eight kills and four digs.
  • Maya Stolarz tallied five kills with one block and one dig.
  • Katy O'Connell assisted on both Skidmore blocks. She had four kills.
  • Catriona Hoelperl registered 19 assists with three digs, while Marlowe McIntyre had 14 digs and three helpers.
  • Naomi Clauhs and Jayden Wiese paced the Bombers with 13 kills apiece. Wiese finished an efficient .579 hitting.
  • Wesley Slavin had 36 assists, 10 digs, and three aces.
  • Gabriella Gonzalez-Abreu tallied 11 kills and 12 digs.
  • The hosts ran out to an early lead in set one, but Skidmore inched back to as close as two at 8-6. A 7-1 Bomber run from there put the set out of reach.
  • Set two featured the only lead changes of the night. Skidmore let a five-point (14-9) lead slip from its grasp as the hosts came back from a slow start to hit .313 and grab the commanding 2-0 lead. Ithaca scored six out of seven to tie it at 15 before there were ties again at 17 and 18. A Wiese kill gave the Bombers their first lead, 19-8, since early in the set. The lead went to two for a moment on a Bridget Altland ace before Chen stepped up for a high-leverage kill to pull the Thoroughbreds back to within one. Ithaca got the next one, but a service error pulled Skidmore right back to within a point at 21-20. Clauhs took it from there with a pair of kills sandwiched around a Thoroughbred error to bring up set point. Clauhs came back two points later with a kill to clinch it.
  • The Bombers hit .417 in set three to complete the sweep and finished at .333 overall.
  • Skidmore did not manage to get a service ace despite committing just five errors at the line to Ithaca's 11.
  • The defeat snapped the Thoroughbreds' seven-match winning streak coming in. Skidmore's 10 losses on the year match the fewest by the program since 2012
