SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College Volleyball team is set for a big weekend, as Liberty League play comes to Union and Skidmore this weekend. The Thoroughbreds will square off against Bard and Clarkson in Schenectady, and host St. Lawrence and Vassar to close league play at the Williamson Sports Center.
With the top three spots all but clinched by Vassar, Clarkson, and RIT, Skidmore and Union will likely battle for the final spot in the Liberty League Tournament. The Dutchwomen are a game ahead of the Thoroughbreds, with both teams splitting the season series this season. Union has the slight advantage due to a tiebreaker, which involves a win against a team above them in the standings in RIT.
The Thoroughbreds come into the weekend contests after a dramatic victory against Plattsburgh Tuesday evening, pulling off the win in five sets.
Caite Canfield had a double-double with 17 digs and 14 kills for the Thoroughbreds.
Bailey Hutchins had a double-double of her own and narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 digs and 30 assists to go along with nine kills.
Rachel Licata added 12 kills and five blocks, while
Allie Dillon had 16 digs.
Katy Ehnstrom contributed a team-high 16 kills and Marcela Familiar-Bolaños added a team-high 24 digs.
SCOUTING BARD (6-21, 0-8 LL)
The Raptors come into the final weekend of league play looking for their first conference win. Bard went 1-2 last week, sweeping SUNY-Delhi on Oct. 15, as Sofia Koukia was named to the Liberty League's honor roll for her efforts leading the Raptors. The sophomore outside hitter racked up 38 kills to lead Bard, and tallied 16 kills and seven digs against Sage. She also hit an insane .611 in the victory against SUNY-Delhi.
The last time the teams met, Skidmore defeated Bard 3-0 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Lauren Wolters paced the Skidmore attack with 18 assists, and Ehnstrom (11) and Hutchins (10) tallied double-digit kills.
SCOUTING CLARKSON (17-8, 7-1 LL)
Clarkson is poised to once again win the regular season title as the playoffs loom. The Golden Knights come into the weekend on an uncharacteristic four-game losing streak, as the team headed to the Midwest Invitational to take on some of the nation's top teams.
Kate Isaksen and Rachel Aird were honored by the league this past Monday. Isaksen earned Rookie of the Week honors, averaging 7.00 digs per set (147 total) in the five contests last week. To open things up last week, Isaksen delivered 33 digs in a four-set win against Potsdam State (8.25 per set) and then added 18 against top-ranked Calvin College (6.00 per set), 26 versus Ohio Wesleyan (5.20 per set), 42 against Heidelberg (10.50 per set) and then 28 against fifth-ranked Hope College (5.60 per set). Aird was named to the honor roll after another big week, racking up 23 kills against Potsdam, and a 19-kill, 8-block performance against Ohio Wesleyan.
The last time the teams met, Clarkson won all three sets against the Thoroughbreds in Canton. Familiar-Bolaños led the way with 21 digs, and Canfield and Hutchins each recorded two service aces.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE (10-15, 1-7 LL)
The Saints come into the weekend on a two-game winning streak, after defeating SUNY Oswego in four sets, and SUNY Canton in three. The Saints are solid defensively, leading the league with 1.84 blocks per set.
Maddy Bishop leads the St. Lawrence offense with a .246 hitting percentage, and is second with 3.79 assists per set. Amanda Teppo is right behind Bishop with a .237 hitting percentage, and leads the conference, and in the top-40 nationally with 1.06 blocks per set.
The last time Skidmore and St. Lawrence met, the Thoroughbreds staged an incredible rally down 0-2, coming back to defeat the Saints in five sets in Canton. Canfield led all players with 18 kills, adding six digs. Hutchins nearly notched a triple-double, recording 31 assists, 14 digs, and nine kills.
SCOUTING VASSAR (16-7, 7-1 LL)
Vassar is finishing off a tremendous year, and can win the regular season title for the first time since 2005. The Thoroughbreds could spoil that as the teams meet to end the league season. Vassar comes into the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning nine of the last 10 matchups. The Brewers lead the league in hitting percentage (.227) as well as kills per set (5.39).
Devan Gallagher was named to the honor roll by the league Monday after leading the team with 47 kills in the past three games. Against Wellesley, she racked up 17 kills while hitting .326, adding two digs.
Skidmore and Vassar last met on Sept. 24. The host Brewers won in three sets, despite a seven-kill, 14 assist performance by Hutchins. Ehnstrom led all players with four blocks, with
Sophia Hettler right behind her with three.
