Men's lacrosse falls at Vassar, 10-5

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team was knocked off by Vassar College, 10-5, Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
 
Senior attackman Quinn Hawkins netted a goal for the seventh-straight game, Kevin Mulvey scored two goals and Jack Metzler and Josh Trachtenberg both tallied for the Thoroughbreds (1-7, 0-2 Liberty).
 
The Brewers (4-4, 1-1) opened the scoring seven seconds into the contest as Brandon DeStasio converted on a feed from Noah Parson. Trachtenberg's brought Skidmore level at 10:18 with his second goal of the season.
 
Vassar gained control of the game late in the first quarter, potting three goals in under two minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Max Herman restored the Brewers lead at 4:27, Scott Brenke added a goal at 3:50 and Colin Cederna scored the final goal of the quarter at 2:46.
 
The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle, as Herman registered the lone goal of the period at 8:57, giving Vassar a 5-1 lead at the half.
 
Mulvey helped the Thoroughbreds chip away at the lead in the opening stages of the third quarter, tallying his first of the game at 11:45. The teams traded extra-man goals to make it 6-3 midway through the third quarter, as Sean Brazier scored for Vassar before Hawkins found the back of the net at 6:19. Mulvey's team-high 13th goal bookended the scoring in the third quarter, bringing Skidmore within two.
 
The Brewers scored three unanswered goals in the final frame, while their defense continued to stifle the Thoroughbreds attack. Metzler potted his seventh goal of the season with 2:44 remaining in the game, but it was not enough as Vassar held on for the 10-5 win.
 
The Brewers outshot the Thoroughbreds 42-28 and owned a 24-21 advantage in ground balls. Matt Diaco turned away 12 shots in goal for Skidmore, while Vassar goalie Andrew Nicol made 10 saves.
 
Skidmore hosts crosstown rival RPI in a Liberty League matchup at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2.
