SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- Morrisville scored all five its goals in the game's first 9:50 and then held Skidmore off for a 5-2 win in the first round of the Skidmore Invitational.
Williams beat Johnson & Wales, 4-3 in the other semifinal later Saturday. The consolation game will be Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by the championship game at 4 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds are 2-6, while the Mustangs improve to 3-4-2. Williams remains unbeaten at 4-0-1, while J&W is 5-3.
Brad Holman started the Morrisville scoring at 3:52 of the first from Alex Lewis. Darren Young scored his third of the season at 6:13 and Alex Lewis was credited with a goal at 7:33 for a 3-0 lead. M.J. Maerki scored a pair of goals 1:13 apart at 8:43 and 9:50 for the 5-0 lead.
Skidmore got on the board at 15:24 of the second when Andreas scored from
Anthony Bird and
Marc Cibelli.
Mickey Foley cut it to 5-2 from Bird and
Connor Van Arnam at 5:24 of the third with his fourth goal of the season.
Morrisville outshot Skidmore 33-27, including a 17-8 advantage in the first period.
Jack McDonald had eight saves in the first period for the Thoroughbreds, while
Ben Freiberg was solid in relief, shutting the Mustangs down with 20 saves on 21 shots over the final 51:17.
Jakob Rasmussen earned his first win of the season with 25 saves for Morrisville.
Williams scored the game's final three goals to take the second semifinal Johnson & Wales lead 3-1 before the Eph run. Williams took advantage of several untimely Johnson & Whales penalties to score three power play goals and secure the win.
C.J. Shugart scored two goals to lead Williams. The Wildcats had goals from Jason Healey, Matt Lanzillotti, and Michael Mazzotta.
