Men's lacrosse downed by Clarkson

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. - A strong fourth quarter propelled the Clarkson Golden Knights to a 15-8 Liberty League win over the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team, Sunday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

With the loss, the Thoroughbreds move to 2-2 in League play and 4-8 overall, while Clarkson improves to 3-2 in the conference standings and 8-4 overall.

Clarkson controlled the tempo in the first quarter, scoring the game's first three goals before Bryan Connolly was able to find the back of the net to stall Clarkson's momentum.

A Knight goal at 5:02 of the first stanza stretched Clarkson's lead to 4-1, but Kevin Mulvey tallied Skidmore's second goal with 31 ticks left on the clock when Jon Hoeg dished the ball to the freshman midfielder who beat Clarkson goalie, Ryan Cole, to bring Skidmore within two.

The second frame belonged to Skidmore, as the visitors battled back to tie the game at 5-5 with a 3-0 scoring run of its own.  The Thoroughbred run began with 10:25 remaining in the half when Hoeg dumped the ball off to a cutting J.P. Sullivan on a man-up opportunity, making it 5-3. Three minutes later, Mike Perlow beat his man and fired a shot past Cole for his 30th goal of the season.  Sullivan would tie the contest less than a minute later with his second goal of the afternoon, to cap the Thoroughbred run.

Both teams continued to wrestle for the lead, as the third quarter saw two ties and two lead changes, but the home team would reestablish its earlier momentum, scoring seven unanswered goals stretching from the 11:09 mark of the third quarter to the 3:16 mark of the fourth to hold a 14-7 advantage.

Perlow notched one more mark for the Thoroughbreds with 2:42 remaining in the game, but time was not on the visitor's side as Clarkson won 15-8.

Sullivan recorded three goals in the loss, while Hoeg notched three assists.  Perlow had two goals and Connolly had one goal and an assist.  Matt Diaco takes the loss in goal after making 16 saves.

Clarkson had 11 different players register a point in the game with Corey Herrington tallying a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Skidmore will host Middlebury College, Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Wachenheim Field.
