Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team nearly pulled off the upset of 12th ranked Trinity College (Conn.) before allowing a last second goal in sudden death overtime for the 11-10 loss.
The Thoroughbreds move to 1-3 on the season, while Trinity begins its 2013 campaign 1-0.
Skidmore was first to get on the board when
Bryan Connolly found the back of the net at 12:13 of the first quarter. The Thoroughbred lead would not last for long however, as an early man-up advantage for the Bantams resulted in a Matt Cohen goal, evening the score at 1-1.
Skidmore dominated the remainder of the quarter, scoring three unanswered goals in the final ten minutes of the first. Connolly started the scoring run by launching a shot from the circle that Trinity goalie Riley Cahill couldn't handle for his second goal of the afternoon. Less than four minutes later,
Mike Perlow found the back of the net, giving the Thoroughbreds a 3-1 lead.
Jon Hoeg capped the scoring run at 1:30 as he broke away from his defender for Skidmore's fourth goal of the opening frame.
As the second quarter got underway, Rob Norgueras scored two quick goals for Trinity to bring the Bantams within one.
Skidmore would answer at 6:48, as the Thoroughbreds had the man-up advantage. Perlow drove the middle and dumped it off to an open Hoeg who riffled one into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. The Thoroughbreds were at it again seconds later when
Seth Berger won the faceoff and found
Thomas Park and his long stick for Skidmore's sixth goal.
The Thoroughbreds scored their third unanswered goal of the quarter when
Matt Ohara tallied his fourth goal of the season, giving Skidmore a 7-3 lead, but the Bantams would answer with just over a minute remaining, making the score 7-4 as both teams broke for halftime.
Both teams battled back-and-forth for much of the second half. Entering the fourth quarter, Skidmore clung to an 8-6 lead, but Trinity stormed back, producing a 3-0 run of its own to take a 9-8 lead - its first lead of the afternoon.
Skidmore would even the score when J.P. Sullivan beat his defender and rocketed a shot from the left side for Skidmore's ninth goal.
With the score knotted at 9-9 and time ticking away, Skidmore worked its offense until a Hoeg pass found the stick of
Kevin Mulvey who beat Kahill with a low shot to give Skidmore a 10-9 lead with 3:30 left in regulation. Seconds later, Trinity evened the score at 10-10.
An extra frame would be needed to settle the outcome of the game. The Thoroughbreds managed three shots in the period, but could not come up with the goal. With 34 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Trinity's Nick Shaheen ended Skidmore's hopes of an upset, netting the game winner for a final score of 11-10.
Hoeg led all scorers with five points (three goals and 2 assists). Hoeg also accounted for five groundballs. Connolly and Perlow each had two points in the game, while five Skidmore players contributed one point.
Trinity was paced by Josh Shaheen's four goals and five groundballs. Nogueras scored three goals for the hat trick and Matt Cohen added three points as well (two goals, one assist).
Matt Diaco recorded 13 saves in the loss for Skidmore, while Kahill nabbed 14.
Skidmore returns to the field March 11 at 7 p.m. against Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
