HENNIKER, N.H.— New England College scored two unanswered third period goals en route to a 6-4 victory over the visiting Skidmore College in ECAC East hockey play Friday.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 3-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC East action. The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 2-2-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in ECAC East play.
The Pilgrims would get on the board early in the opening period as the defense would pick up a loose puck at center ice and sophomore Cheyne Matheson (Wheatley, Ontario) would put in his second goal of the season assisted by James O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Kyle Manlow (Murreta, Calif.).
The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 2-0 at the 8:56 mark in the first period as captain Samuli Turunen (Joesnsuu, Finland) would tip-in a shot by Viktor vonHaugwitz (Karlsborg, Sweden). Skidmore would get a goal back late in the period as senior Tony Giancin (St. Louis, Mo.) would rebound in a shot by
Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine) with just 1:30 remaining on the clock.
NEC would take the 3-1 lead just 2:09 into the second period as Dan Shirilla (Landenberg, Pa.) would notch his first collegiate goal. Skidmore's
Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc.) would cut the lead to 3-1scoring his fourth goal of the season four minutes later on a Thoroughbred power-play. Skidmore would then explode for two goals in a 20 second span , including a goal by
Nick Mannarino (Latham, N.Y.) and another goal by Beck.
The Pilgrims would not trail long as senior Ben Maclaughlin (Beverly, Mass.) would fire a shot over the shoulder of the Skidmore keeper assisted by Matheson knotting the game at 4-4 heading into the final period.
In the third, NEC used goals by Kevin Marceau (Concord, N.H.) and Matheson for the 6-4 final.
Skidmore finished the game with the slight 31-30 advantage in shots on net.

Jack McDonald (King City, Ontario) who stopped 24 Pilgrim shots. Sebastian Andersson (Sundyberg, Sweden) recorded 27 saves for NEC
Skidmore will take the ice on Saturday, Nov. 16 when they travel to take on conference foe St. Anselm College.
