Quick start for Skidmore in 8-3 win over USM

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—Tony Giacin scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to an 8-3 ECAC East win over Southern Maine University, Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Thoroughbreds are 8-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the ECAC East, while the Huskies drop to 6-10 and 3-7.
 
Skidmore got out of the game fast with a pair of goals in the game's first four minutes. Ondrej Krajnak stuffed one home from Erik Nilsson at 2:06. Vlad Gavrik made it 2-0 when he found himself all alone in front of the net for his team-high eighth goal of the season at 4:08.  The score held to the break.
 
The Thoroughbreds dominated the second period with four unanswered goals to make it 6-0. Aaron Beck scored on a rebound at 6:11 from Giacin and Julian Malakorn.  Anders Gundersen scored his first of the season 39 seconds later with an unassisted power-play goal. Giacin made it 5-0 at 10:51 from Zach Menard and Gavrik. David Limoges closed out the period with a power-play goal at 13:36 from Giacin and Beck.
 
Southern Maine mounted a comeback in the third. The Huskies scored three straight goals to open the period, cutting the lead to 6-3. Angelo Vrachnas scored a power-play goal 47 seconds into the period. Mike Greene made it 6-2 at 3:50 and Vrachnas capped the run with his second of the game at 5:11.  That would be it for USM.
 
Aaron Beck collected his second goal of the game from David Limoges and Giacin at 11:04. Giacin picked-up his fifth point of the game with his fourth goal of the season at 18:54 from Dave Dupuis and Alex Radmin.
 
Ben Freiberg improved to 5-2 with 33 saves, including 15 in the third period.
 
Skidmore went 3-9 on the power play, while USM was 1-7.
 
The Thoroughbreds host the University of New England on Saturday at 4 p.m.
