Canton, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team dropped its Liberty League opener on Saturday, 11-6 to St. Lawrence.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in leauge play, while the Saints remain unbeaten at 5-0 and 1-0.
The first quarter was evenly-played throughout with the home team owning a 10-9 advantage in shots. Tied 2-2 in the final stages of the period, junior Mac Johnson scored a man-up goal for the Scarlet and Brown with 1:58 to go, giving St. Lawrence a 3-2 lead at the end of one.
SLU would build a 6-3 lead at halftime thanks to an 11-2 edge in shots in the second quarter. Dave Schoettler and Dave Hovey scored goals only 1:27 apart for a 5-2 lead. Skidmore's
Jon Hoeg made it 5-3 at 10:30, but Hovey capitalized on a Thoroughbred turnover to push the lead to 6-3 with 4.1 seconds left in the half.
St. Lawrence extended its lead to 9-3 after three and then pulled away in the fourth for the 11-6 win.
Both teams finished 10-of-20 in face-offs. The home team was 4-for-7 on the man-up and held Skidmore scoreless (0-for-4).
Hovey closed with two goals and four assists to lead all scorers, while Hoeg led Skidmore with four points on two goals and two assists. Jeff Goeke started the game in net for St. Lawrence and made three saves, while Jack Nuland closed out the win in the second half with five stops.
Connor Dowling suffered the loss despite turning in a 15-save performance.
Skidmore will head to Poughkeepsie, NY next to take on Vassar College on March 31.
