Thoroughbreds cruise into NCAA Second Round

Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with Wednesday's 6-0 first round victory over UMass Dartmouth at Wagner Park.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 14-5, while the Corsairs finish their season with a 17-6 record.  Skidmore will travel to top-seeded Middlebury for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday.  The teams met earlier this season with the Panthers picking up a 2-1 victory.

Dani DeGregory got the scoring started for the Thoroughbreds, putting home a goal at 8:58.  Sam Skott streaked down the sideline and sent a pass across the circle to DeGregory who found the back of the cage for a 1-0 Skidmore lead.  Kelly Blackhurst made it a 2-0 game when she redirected Molly Gile's shot from the top past UMass Dartmouth goalie Lauren O'Brien at 25:21.
 
The score remained 2-0 at the break as the Corsairs were able to draw five corners and get off six shots but couldn't find the cage.
 
The second half was all Thoroughbreds as Blackhurst tallied her second of the game and 28th of the year when she corralled a rebound and blasted a shot from the top of the circle to make it 3-0.  Just 58 seconds later, Blackhurst beat her defender on the end line and fed Ceilidh MacNeill for her 12th of the season and a 4-0 lead. 
 
At 55:52, DeGregory tallied her second of the game and 14th of the year after Skott broke down the defense and set up DeGregory perfectly in front of the cage.  Skott capped the scoring at 60:03 when she collected a rebound and fired home a shot from a tough angle for the sixth and final goal of the contest.
 
Haley McDougall came up with six saves to earn the shutout and improve to 14-5.  She was active in goal, breaking up plays and coming up with big saves in big moments.  O'Brien made 14 saves in goal for UMass Dartmouth.
 
Blackhurst finished with two goals and an assist to move into second on the all-time scoring list with 72 goals and 39 assists for 183 points.  DeGregory finished with a pair of goals and Skott added a goal and two assists.
 
Skidmore outshot the Corsairs 28-9 and held a 20-10 advantage in penalty corners.
