Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—After dropping the first set, the Clarkson University women's volleyball team stormed back for a 3-1 (25-27, 25- 19, 25-23, 25-19 win over Skidmore College in the Liberty League Championship, Saturday at the Williamson Sports Center.
The Thoroughbreds end the regular season 26-7, while the Golden Knights improve to 28-6. The Liberty League does not get an automatic NCAA Division III tournament bid, so both teams will wait until Monday afternoon to find out their NCAA fates.
The win was Clarkson's first in three matches this season against Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds beat the Golden Knights in the 2011 championship match.
Tournament MVP Lani Durio led Clarkson with 58 assists and seven digs. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Aishvina Arasu and Victoria Kirkemo. Arasu had a match-high 22 kills and seven digs. Kirkemo added 18 kills, three aces, and nine digs.
For the Skidmore,
Corinne Palmer earned all-tournament selection with 11 kills and five blocks (four solo).
Mallory Mendelsohn and
Sam Friedman were also named to the all-tournament team. Mendelsohn had 31 assists and 10 digs, while Friedman had a match-high 32 digs.
Rounding out the all-tournament team was Vassar's Chloe McGuire.
In the first set, Skidmore led the entire way until the Clarkson tied it 24-24 when an Arasu kill found the inside of the back line. The Golden Knights then took a 25-24 lead, but three straight Thoroughbred points, capped by a Palmer kill won it for Skidmore.
Clarkson used a 13-2 run to close out the 25-19 win. Kirkemo had seven kills in the second set for the Golden Knights. Friedman kept the Thoroughbreds in it with 11 digs.
In the third set, Skidmore got out to an early lead, but Clarkson worked its way back in, tying it 17-17 and taking its first lead of the set at 24-23. Arasu had 10 kills, including four down the stretch. Palmer had five kills and
Elise Finnerty had four for Thoroughbreds.
The Golden Knights had to hold off a late Skidmore rally in the fourth set to hold on for the 25-19 win. Down 20-12, the Thoroughbreds fought back to within four, 21-17, but Clarkson would hang on for the six-point win.
