Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 6-3 ECAC East win over New England College, Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds earn the season split with the Pilgrims, avenging a 5-4 road loss on Nov. 12. Skidmore is 6-10-2 overall and 5-6-0 in ECAC play. NEC drops to 8-7-2 and 5-4-2.
Skidmore took an early lead when
Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass./NH Monarchs) scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 2:36 from
Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons) and
Brad Schuler (Delran, N.J./Hamilton Red Wings). Cottam made it 2-0 at 16:40 on a rebound off a Dupuis shot.
Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc./Lake Forest Acad.) picked-up the second assist. New England got one back when Ben Souders scored a power-play goal off a rebound at 18:55.
Niko Uola tied it for the Pilgrims with a short-handed marker at 4:17 of the second. Cottam responded 17 seconds later with a power-play goal at 4:34 from Menard and
Tim Colvin (Brunswick, Ohio/Hartford Wolfpack).
Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo./Iowa Outlaws) scored his team-high 11
th of the season to make it 4-2 at 14:42 off a perfect pass from
Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Que./Worcester Acad.). Anders Gunderson (Marblehead, Mass./Northwood) scored his collegiate goal at 18:18 from
Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo./New England Huskies) and
Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass./Andover Acad.) to give Skidmore a 5-2 lead at the end of two.
The Thoroughbreds controlled the tempo in the third period, extending the lead to 6-2 when Walsh scored his second of the season from Beck and Cottam at 5:13. NEC managed a 5-on-3 power-play goal when Jacob Andersson scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 7:05 for the 6-3 final.
Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) had 24 saves for the win. Shawn Sirman stopped 25 shots for New England.
Skidmore will host St. Anselm College at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while the Pilgrims travel to Castleton State.
