Skott's last second goal lifts #3 Skidmore

Box Score

Williamstown, Mass. - Freshman Sam Skott scored with no time left to lead the 3rd-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to a 2-1 win, Friday night at Williams.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 9-1, while the Ephs fall to 4-4.

With seconds remaining, Skidmore earned a corner as senior Jackie Slocombe sent a pass in to Kelly Blackhurst and Skott deflected Blackhurst's shot past the keeper with no time remaining to secure the 2-1 victory.

Emily Jablonski got Williams out to an early lead, scoring at the 11:38 mark to make it 1-0.

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the first half, but Blackhurst tied it up in the 44th minute with her 12th goal of the season.  Slocombe was credited with the assist.

Both teams played a close game for the remainder of regulation before Skott sent the Thoroughbreds home with a victory.

Haley McDougall made two saves in goal for Skidmore, while Ariana Spiliotes finished with nine stops.

"The Skidmore Field Hockey team played with tremendous heart for the come from behind victory tonight at Williams" coach Beth Hallenbeck said.  "The Ephs were tough, strong and aggressive and the Thoroughbreds found themselves down 0-1 in the first half. Skidmore stepped up the intensity in the second half and showed that they had another gear.  As the Thoroughbreds found their rhythm and began to string together passes, they started to dominate the game.  Kelly Blackhurst blasted a shot from the top on a corner feed from Jackie Slocombe to level the score with 15 minutes left to play.  The T-breds gained the momentum and continued to have quality scoring chances but no with no reward.  They fought to earn another corner in the waning seconds and the hard work paid off.  Since corners are played out even if time has expired, the Thoroughbreds gave themselves the  opportunity to end the game in regulation.  Blackhurst received the ball on the corner play and sent the ball into the goal mouth where Sam Skott deflected it in for the exciting game winner.  The hard fought victory was a result of a tremendous team effort.  Haley McDougall denied some key chances, midfielders Jackie Slocombe and Caylyn Sullivan worked tirelessly to control the field, and Kelly Blackhurst and Sam Skott made key contributions up front.  Constant hustle and tenacity from every Skidmore player on the field tipped the balance in the Thoroughbred's favor. "

The Thoroughbreds are at St. Lawrence on October 8.
