#11 Middlebury edges #12 Skidmore in OT, 11-10

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Mike Giordano scored from Tim Cahill with 2:49 left in the second overtime to give 11th ranked Middlebury College an 11-10 non-league win over 12th ranked Skidmore College, Tuesday evening at Wachenheim Field.

The loss snaps a six-game win streak for the 8-2 Thoroughbreds. The Panthers improve to 7-2.

Middlebury opened the game with a pair of quick goals by Andrew Conner at 14:28 and 13:15. Skidmore answered with consecutive goals by Mike Holden, defender Brian Milazzo, Mike Perlow, and Jon Hoeg to lead 4-2 after one.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter. Panther midfielder Andrew Metros cut the Thoroughbred lead to one, 4-3, with his first goal of the season at 9:43. Skidmore All-American Matt Levesque got it back to two at 4:56. David Hild responded with his 25th of the season from Giordano at 1:37 for the Panthers. Mike Holden scored his 20th of the year at :35 to give the Thoroughbreds a 6-4 advantage at the half.

Middlebury scored the first three goals of the second half to regain the lead, 7-6. Conner scored twice and Tim Cahill once in the run. Levesque tied it for the Thoroughbreds from Bryan Connolly with 1:33 left to make it 7-7 after three quarters.

Skidmore went back on top at 13:07 of the fourth when Perlow scored his 18th of the season. Connor tied it 8-8 with his career-high fifth of the game at 10:47. Middlebury's Billy Chapman grabbed the ground ball off the ensuing face off and went the distance to put the Panthers in front 9-8 at 10:31. David Hild made it 10-8 with 3:46 to play.

The Thoroughbreds battled back to tie it. Levesque scored his third of the game with 2:16 to play in regulation to cut the lead to one, 10-9. Then with Middlebury content to run the clock out, Skidmore defender Michael Jennings caused a turnover and Milazzo grabbed the ground ball and found Holden alone for his third score of the game with :29 to play.

Both teams had chances to win it in the first overtime. Skidmore goalie Connor Dowling made a big save on a tough David Hild shot with 1:12 to play. Middlebury goalie Ryan Deane returned the favor 11 seconds later with a huge save on a hard Levesque shot from inside the circle.

In the second overtime, Ryan Paradis won the faceoff for the Thoroughbreds, but Henry Clark forced a turnover behind his own net. Middlebury quickly cleared the ball with consecutive passes, the last by Cahill who passed up the chance to shoot from the top of the circle and instead found Giordano alone in front. Giordano's shot just beat Dowling high for the winner.

Holden and Levesque scored three each for Skidmore. Jacques Ward had six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Dan DeMartini added seven ground balls and Paradis won 13 of 24 faceoffs and had a game-high 11 ground balls.

Conner led the Panthers with five goals. Matt Rayner had five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Middlebury had a 54-41 shot advantage, but Skidmore held the edge in ground balls, 44-38.

Dowling had 19 saves for the Thoroughbreds, including six in the third quarter. Deane finished with 16 saves for the Panthers, 10 coming in the first half.

Skidmore returns to Liberty League play at home on April 16 at 5 p.m. against Union. Middlebury is at Trinity the same day for a 2 p.m. game.
