Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team knocked off 8th ranked Rensselaer, 11-9 in a key Liberty League contest, Wednesday at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked 19th, have won five straight to improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play. The Engineers had their five-game win streak ended to fall to 6-2 and 1-1. The win was Skidmore's 10th straight at Wachenheim Field. The game was a rematch of last year's Liberty League championship game, won by RPI.

Jacques Ward led Skidmore with two goals, seven ground balls, and six caused turnovers. Mike Holden scored twice and Mike Perlow had two goals and an assist for the Thoroughbreds.

For RPI, Devin Arnold scored three goals and Conor Chocheles had two goals and an assist.

Skidmore led the entire game, including an 11-4 lead late in the third quarter, before the Engineers mounted a comeback, scoring the game's final five goals, but the Thoroughbreds held on for the 11-9 win.

Skidmore built a 7-3 lead at the half with six different players scoring.

The teams traded goals to start the third, before Skidmore ran off three straight on goals by Sam Lawfer, Perlow, and Ward for the 11-4 lead. The Engineers regrouped, scoring three goals in the final 3:43 of the third with Chocheles, Arnold and Nick Billy connecting to cut the lead to 11-7 at the end of three.

Chocheles scored his 18th of the season at 11:09 of the fourth and Arnold scored his 16th with 10:23 to play to cut it to 11-9. The Thoroughbred defense held tight the rest of the way behind goalie Connor Dowling's six saves over the final 10 minutes.

Dowling improved to 5-0, finishing with 13 saves. James Manchester had 14 saves for RPI.

Skidmore held a slight 40-35 shot and 37-31 ground ball advantage.

"We played some tough opponents in the early season to get ready for a battle like today," said Skidmore coach Jack Sandler. " The guys hung in tough at the end and showed some guts in holding off the late RPI rally.

"I was really impressed with our "next man up" attitude, as we dealt with a few minor injuries during the game and the subs really came through. We're looking forward to building on this one."

The Thoroughbreds are at St. Lawrence on Saturday at 1 p.m., while the Engineers are at Hamilton the same day for a 1 p.m. game.
