Haverford hands Skidmore first loss, 12-8

Haverford, Pa. – A solid offensive attack helped the Haverford College men's lacrosse team defeat a previously unbeaten Skidmore College squad, 12-8, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field.

The Thoroughbreds were 3-0 coming into the game against the 14th-ranked Fords (4-2) but Haverford used five sets of back-to-back goals throughout the contest to slow down the visitors.

Skidmore's Matt Levesque had a game-high five goals.

Myles Monaghan's four goals led the Fords but three teammates also had multi-goal games. Max Hjelm and Phillip Valliant tallied three apiece and Andrew Kim added two scores in the win.

Skidmore's Levesque kicked off the scoring quickly stunning the crowd with a goal less than three minutes into the first period to give the visitors the lead. Valliant and Hjelm went back-to-back late in the period erasing the Skidmore advantage and propelling the Fords into the lead, but the Thoroughbreds scored quickly after the opening face-off of the second stanza to knot the score at 2-2.

Monaghan then scored two in a row, though, to give Haverford a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game.

A 6-4 halftime lead for the host Fords grew into a four-goal lead, 10-6, by the end of the third period. Hjelm's third of the game (18th of the season) nearing the five-minute mark of the fourth period upped the advantage to five but the Thoroughbreds battled back with a back-to-back pair themselves before Monaghan's fourth of the game and 10th of the season put a nail in the coffin.

Joe Banno finished with 13 saves in goal for Haverford and Flip Bongaerts stopped 12 shots for Skidmore..

Skidmore's man-up offense was 4-for-7.
