Skidmore beats #4 Bowdoin 7-6 in OT

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Alex Mykolenko  scored at 2:31 over overtime to give the Skidmore College hockey team a 7-6 win over fourth ranked Bowdoin College, Friday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds have won two straight over nationally ranked teams with a 3-3 overall and 2-1 record in ECAC East/NESCAC play. The Polar Bears lose for the first time this season, dropping to 3-1 and 2-1 in league play.

Skidmore led 3-0 after one period and 6-2 after two, before Bowdoin scored four unanswered third period goals to force the overtime.

Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass./NH Monarchs), Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons), and Joe Melnyk (Rotterdam, N.Y./CD Selects) scored first period goals for the Thoroughbreds.

Bowdoin cut the lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Daniel Weiniger at 5:11. Dave Dupuis (Kuujjuaq, Quebec) scored his first goal of the season at 15:20 to give Skidmore a 4-1 lead. Harry Matheson scored for Bowdoin at 16:20 to get it back to within two, 4-2. The Thoroughbreds scored twice in the final 1:41 with goals by Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo./New England Huskies) and Menard to make it 6-2.

Connor Shannon took over in goal in the third for Bowdoin and provide the Polar Bears with solid goaltending and a chance to get back in it. Seeing his first action of the season, Shannon stopped 11 shots, including three during a 5-on-3 Skidmore power-play.

Kyle Lockwood scored at 7:57, Kyle Shearer-Hardy at 12:44 and Matheson at 14:08 to cut the lead to one, 6-5. With the goalie out, Shearer-Hardy set-up Jeff Fanning for the tying goal at 19:10.

The Thoroughbreds hung tough in the overtime, forcing a Bowdoin turnover at center ice that led to Mykolenko beating Shannon high for the game-winner from Dave Dupuis and  Alex Essaris.

Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity Pawling) got the win in net for Skidmore with 21 saves, including 10 in the third period. Steve Messina had 13 saves in two periods for Bowdoin, with Shannon finishing with 13 saves.

Skidmore is home again Saturday at 4 p.m. against Colby College, while Bowdoin travels to Castleton State.
