Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Hunter Thayer scored two goals and Andrew Ross had 35 saves to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 4-2 win over 15th ranked Elmira College in the consolation game of the Skidmore Invitational Tournament. Buffalo State beat Southern Maine 3-0 in the championship game.

In the first game, Skidmore (2-3) grabbed a 2-0 first period lead. Thayer scored his third goal of the season from Zach Menard and Ross at 7:42. Aaron Beck made it 2-0 with his first collegiate goal at 16:38 from Alex Essaris. The Thoroughbreds held the Soaring Eagles to only two shots in the period.

Skidmore stuck quick in the second period. Vlad Gavrik scored 28 in seconds in from Alex Mykolenko, chasing Elmira goalie Matt Milne. Elmira got one back late in the period when Rick Acorn deflected a shot in at 19:17 to make it 3-1 after two.

Thayer extended the lead with his second of the game at 6:54 of the third from Joe Melnyk and Tyler Doremus. Mark Morikawa added one late for the Soaring Eagles.

Essaris and Elmira's Kevin Willer were selected to the all-tournament team.

In the championship game, Buffalo State (6-2-1) posted its second straight shutout. This time it was goalie Kevin Carr coming through with 24 saves for the Bengals. Southern Maine goalie Braely Torris kept his team in the game with 26 saves.

Buffalo State got a late first period goal from Bill Strakosch at 18:57 for a 1-0 lead. Nick Petriello scored at 1:15 of the second to make it 2-0 and tournament MVP Trevor McKinney scored a short-handed empty-net goal at 18:29 for the 3-0 final.

Also selected to the all-tournament team were Jon Rutt of Southern Maine and Sean Murray of Buffalo.
