Skidmore women win 20-18 in overtime

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2009) -- In a see-saw game that featured 38 goals, 79 shots and 116 ground balls, the Skidmore women's lacrosse team scored three goals in overtime to defeat Vassar, 20-18, Friday afternoon in Liberty League play at Weinberg Field. After trailing for 21 minutes of the second half, the Brewers took a 17-16 lead with 1:43 to play, only to see the Thoroughbreds tie the score 30 second later and then control the overtime, scoring three unanswered goals.

The loss drops Vassar to 3-5, 0-2 in the Liberty League while Skidmore improves to 5-2, 1-0. Skidmore travels to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a 2:00 p.m. game.

Skidmore's sophomore midfielder Kimberly Segalas, junior attack Abbery Klaus and senior midfielder Laura Flynn scored for the Thoroughbreds in overtime, the goals by Segalas and Klaus coming in the first minute of the three minute overtime. Vassar's senior midfielder Jesse Albert tried to bring her team back in the second three minute overtime, scoring her tally one minute into the game, but Skidmore was able to maintain ball possession and secure the victory.

The Brewers led 7-5 at halftime. Skidmore scored six of the game's next seven goals to start the second half, enabling them to take an 11-8 lead. For the majority of the second half, the Brewers trailed by two goals. Each time Vassar tried to dig into the Skidmore lead, the Thoroughbreds edged ahead with an opportune goal. Down 13-10 with 12:13 to play following a Skidmore goal by sophomore attack Lindsay Stavola, the Brewers mounted a comeback that tied the game at 14-14 after sophomore attack Sarah Warner scored her third goal of the game. .

With 7:17 to play, Skidmore nudged ahead 16-14 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Stavola, her third of the game off a fast break tally. The Brewers then scored three unanswered goals to take a precarious 17-16 lead with 1:43 to play, the last tally coming off a free position shot.

Skidmore's Klaus promptly led her team down the field and was fouled 30 seconds later. With 1:13 to play, her goal sent the game into overtime off a free position shot.

Skidmore's sophomore attack Lauren McCarthy had four goals in the contest, but collected a game-high 16 ground balls, the majority following draw controls.

Vassar goalie Nicole Engelhardt made nine saves in the game while Skidmore's senior tender Courtney DeStefano had 12 stops.
