ROCHESTER, NY – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team rolled through the first three quarters but couldn't fend off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by Rochester, falling 13-12 in overtime on the road Friday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds (7-8, 3-5 Liberty League) built a strong lead early, doubling up the scoreboard at halftime and taking a commanding 11-5 lead at the 8:41 mark of the third quarter. However, the Yellowjackets (10-4, 6-2 Liberty League) responded with seven unanswered goals that extended into the fourth quarter to flip the game and ultimately secure the overtime win.
In a tale of two halves, Skidmore outshot Rochester 14-9 in the first half and forced 15 turnovers to control possession. In the second half, the momentum shifted as Rochester generated 27 shots and won the possession battle with a 6-4 turnovers forced advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a high-scoring first period, the Yellowjackets struck first with a solo goal at the 11:56 mark, before Skidmore answered with four straight scores to take a 4-1 lead with 4:50 remaining in the quarter.
- Junior Charlotte Taylor started the Thoroughbreds' scoring run at 9:13, followed by goals from senior Julia Cafasso, junior Hannah Nash, and freshman Lauren Hughey over the next four minutes.
- Rochester briefly cut into the lead with a goal at 4:13, but Cafasso responded with a solo score at 1:50 to give Skidmore a 5-2 advantage after one.
- In the second period, the Yellowjackets scored a pair of early goals to trim the lead to 5-4 with 11:15 on the clock, but that was as close as they would get as Skidmore closed the half with three straight goals to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.
- Cafasso scored first on a player-up opportunity with 9:13 to go, before Hughey connected on a free position shot at the 3:55 mark and senior Allison Brewer scored off the dish from sophomore Olivia Emerson with 3:17 remaining.
- Coming out of halftime, Skidmore scored three of the first four goals of the third quarter, with tallies from seniors Lily Hudner, Cafasso, and Taylor to build an 11-5 lead at the 8:41 mark.
- However, Rochester closed the quarter with two late goals on consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to 11-7 entering the final period.
- In the fourth, Rochester's momentum continued with four unanswered goals to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:31 remaining.
- One possession later, the Yellowjackets took their first lead of the game with their fifth consecutive goal of the quarter and seventh overall, going ahead 12-11 with 7:50 to go.
- The Thoroughbreds ended the run on a Brewer goal off an assist from Nash to even the score at 12-12 with 4:53 remaining.
- The game went back-and-forth in the final minutes, with Rochester retaking the lead at 3:41 before Hudner answered off a pass from junior Phoebe Ross to tie the game at 13-13 and force overtime.
- In overtime, Rochester scored the golden goal 1:23 into the period to secure the comeback victory.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Cafasso led the offense with four goals, four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
- Nash finished with one goal and dished out an assist.
- Hudner, Hughey, Taylor and Brewer all finished with two goals apiece.
- Ross dished out a pair of assists.
- Junior Tessa Snyder recorded a team-high three caused turnovers with one groundball.
