ONEONTA, NY — Hartwick men's lacrosse led 5-2 in the third quarter only to have Skidmore score the final six goals of the game to earn an 8-5 road win at Wright Stadium Saturday. The victory ups the Thoroughbreds record to 2-0 on the season while the Hawks fall to 1-2.
After over 11 minutes of end to end action in the first quarter of play, Hartwick seized a 3-0 lead with three tallies in the final 3:50 of the period.
Skidmore would draw to within a goal in the early stages of the second period with two tallies in a 2:04 span, and Hartwick would close out the half with a man-up goal with 4:11 on the clock. The Hawks finished the half with a 23-13 edge in shots and a 4-2 lead.
The Thoroughbreds jumped right back into the game with a dominant third period. Paul Koeniger scored a man-up goal at the 9:16 mark, Rob Lutin pulled to within one with 4:14 showing on the clock, and Tom Howley evened the score with 2:10 left. Skidmore ended the stanza out-shooting the Hawks 17-6, earning 18 of 27 ground balls and winning all five face-offs.
Lutin gave Skidmore the lead for good less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Cory Barkoff extended the advantage with just under 10 minutes to play and Tom Levesque closed out the day's scoring with 1:33 to play.
The Thoroughbreds capped the game with a 46-35 edge in shots, including a 33-12 margin in the second half. They also picked up 47 ground balls to the Hawks' 3
Lutin and Barkoff scored two goals each for Skidmore. Barkoff also won 10-of-13 draws on the afternoon and secured a game-high nine ground balls. Goalie Flip Bongaerts made 13 saves.
