Canton, N.Y.--The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team earned its 25th straight Liberty League victory on Saturday, as the No. 20 Saints held off Skidmore College by the score of 11-8. The victory moves St. Lawrence to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while Skidmore falls to 5-2 (0-1)
“This was certainly a big game for us, as we know Skidmore is one of the top programs in our league,” said St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney. “They played us to a pair of one-goal games last year and put together a solid rally today to tie the game late."
St. Lawrence took a 4-0 first quarter lead, but Skidmore found its stride in the second quarter, as they worked to chip away at their deficit.
Matt Levesque would beat Hollingsworth to open the scoring in the stanza, but St. Lawrence came right back with a pair of goals to open up a 6-1 lead. Tom and
Matt Levesque would respond with back-to-back goals only 1:51 apart to make it a 6-3 game before the Saints got a late goal to take a 7-3 lead into the third quarter.
Despite trailing by four goals, it was the Thoroughbreds that asserted themselves in the third quarter as their offense came to life and Bongaerts made five crucial saves. The visitors rattled off four consecutive goals in a span of 6:57 to knot the scoring at 7-7.
Matt Levesque scored three of the four goals including the game-tying man-up score with 3:53 left in the third quarter, while
Rob Lutin added the fourth goal.
With the momentum now on their opponent's side, St. Lawrence re-grouped and managed to score to key goals in the final 1:33 of the third quarter to regain a 9-7 advantage.
Though
Tom Levesque was able to pull Skidmore back to within a goal only 2:17 into the fourth quarter, the Saints' defense would shut down their opponent's offense the rest of the way to protect the lead.
Matt Levesque finished with five goals, while Nick Coppoola had three goals and three assists.
Skidmore finished 2-of-5 on their man-up chances to St. Lawrence's 2-of-4 mark. Hollingsworth finished with eight saves including seven in the opening half to earn the win while Bongaerts finished with 13 stops in the loss.
