Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – A late first-half goal by senior Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, Conn.) pushed the Union College women's soccer team past Skidmore College, 1-0, in Liberty League soccer action Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The win moves the Dutchwomen into second-place in the Liberty League standings, with a record of 10-3-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Thoroughbreds fall to 10-4-2 and 2-2-1 in the Liberty League.
Union's goal was preceded by a Skidmore foul that left sophomore Caitlin O'Donnell (Hampden, Mass.) with a indirect kick in the right corner of the goalie box. On the whistle, O'Donnell tipped the ball to Hargis, who then drove it into the top corner of the net for the score at 32:36.
Skidmore came out aggressively in the second half, when a similar foul left Skidmore with a direct kick at 54:22. Senior
Rachael Sushner (Potomac, Md.) took a shot that looked like it was heading for the top shelf until Union keeper Abby Stohler (West Hartford, Conn.) made a spectacular save by pushing the shot over the crossbar to keep the lead.
Just 41 seconds later, Thoroughbred sophomore
Lindsay Schmitt (Mendon, Mass.) sent a bullet towards the goal from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced out.
Stohler had a solid day in the net for the Dutchwomen, compiling seven saves in the shutout. Freshman keeper
Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) finished with two saves for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds will host Clarkson on Oct. 25 Clarkson in a Liberty League contest starting at 3 pm.
