Grace dishes out three assists in Stable Game shutout of RPI

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – A career night from sophomore Mara Grace fueled the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a crucial 3-0 shutout victory over RPI in a Stable Game matchup under the lights at Wachenheim Field on Wednesday evening.

The Thoroughbreds (4-3-2, 1-2-1 Liberty League) picked up their first conference win behind a hat trick of assists from Grace, who set up two first-half goals and another early in the second half as Skidmore outshot the Engineers (4-3-4, 0-3 Liberty League) by a 15-8 margin and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, junior Sophia Sayers made five saves to earn her sixth career victory and third solo shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the sixth minute, junior Olivia Chandler nearly opened the scoring off a short corner kick, but her shot struck the top of the crossbar.
  • Skidmore broke through in the 25th minute when Grace sent a free kick from just outside the left side of the box to senior Ellianna Caporusso, who headed it in.
  • In the 38th minute, the Thoroughbreds doubled their lead as Grace delivered a cross from the right side of the box to a charging first-year Georgia Campbell, who struck the ball into the back of the net.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Thoroughbreds withstood a barrage of RPI attacks, with Sayers making two saves in the first 90 seconds as the Engineers generated three corners and three shots.
  • On the counterattack in the 48th minute, Grace threaded a pinpoint through ball between RPI defenders to fellow sophomore Bryn Ryan, who scored past the diving Engineers keeper to extend Skidmore's lead to 3-0.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Grace now sits at four assists on the season and five for her career. She is the first Thoroughbred to record three assists in a game since Caporusso accomplished the feat against Mt. St. Mary in 2024.
  • Caporusso scored her second goal in three games, and the fourth of her career.
  • Ryan scored her second career goal.
  • Campbell scored her first career goal.
