ITHACA, NY – The Skidmore College women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.
After conceding in the 20th minute, the Thoroughbreds (3-3-2, 0-2-1 Liberty League) created several quality chances to equalize before halftime, but near misses and strong goalkeeping kept them off the board. The Bombers (5-2-3, 1-1-1 Liberty League) finished the match with a narrow 12-11 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bombers capitalized on a corner kick in the 20th minute when Julia Gilgar scored off the delivery from Jayne Bogle to take the early lead.
- Skidmore nearly equalized on the following possession, as sophomore Mara Grace lofted a pinpoint pass to fellow sophomore Bryn Ryan, who got behind the Ithaca backline for an open run into the box before firing a shot that hit off the right post.
- Senior Ellianna Caporusso put a shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but the ball was fired straight towards the Ithaca goalkeeper who made the save.
- In the 36th minute, senior Abby Lewis nearly headed in the equalizer on a brilliant cross into the box, but a leaping save kept Skidmore off the board.
- Junior goalkeeper Sophia Sayers finished the first half with four saves to keep Skidmore within a goal.
- In the 64th minute, Grace broke down her defender in the attacking third and sent a through ball to Ryan, whose shot went just wide left.
- Skidmore closed out the match with three shots in the final six minutes, but none found the net as Ithaca held on for the win.
