Hornung repeats as Player of the Year, Plourde and staff win again as eight Thoroughbreds earn All-Liberty League distinction

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Jackson Hornung from the Skidmore College baseball team as named the Liberty League Baseball Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Additionally, last year's Co-Coaching Staff of the Year led by head coach Ron Plourde earned the honor again, this time standing alone. In all, eight Thoroughbreds (in addition to the coaching staff) were honored by the Liberty League with postseason honors.
 
Hornung was also the First Team catcher in addition to becoming just the second player in Liberty League/Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) history to earn the Player of the Year award for a second time. Ameer Hasan (pitcher), Trey Bourque (third base), and Anthony Petersen (utility) were voted to the Second Team. Lastly, Brendan O'Neill (shortstop), Danny Melillo (outfield), Max Mello (outfield), and Zachary Leiderman (designated hitter) each earned Honorable Mention status.
 
Jackson Hornung (Sr., C, Ashland, Massachusetts) – Liberty League Player of the Year, All-Liberty League First Team (Catcher)
  • Hornung continued to re-write the record books in his senior season.
  • He hit .424 with 12 home runs, 41 RBI, 51 runs, and 10 stolen bases.
  • Hornung leads the Liberty League in slugging percentage (.803), on-base percentage (.560), on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) (1.363), runs (51), and walks (37).
  • In the field, primarily behind the plate, Hornung gunned down seven runners trying to steal while posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in over 200 chances.
  • Concluding his career as the most decorated player in program history, he posted a .430 career batting average with 22 home runs, 57 extra-base hits, 106 RBI, and a career .540on-base percentage.
  • Despite being limited to 98 career games due to two shortened seasons, Hornung set program records in batting average, home runs, and slugging percentage while placing in the top-five in numerous other offensive categories.
  • The 2022 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3Baseball.com All-American was also recently named the Skidmore College Male Senior Athlete of the Year.
 
Ron Plourde, Pat Geiger '19, Jonathan Kaiser '20, John Barnes, J.T. Tellstone – Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year
  • It is the second consecutive coaching award for the unite that was identical to the 2022 award-winning staff.
  • Overall, it is Plourde's fourth time being named Coach of the Year.
  • Skidmore won the most games (24) in 2023 that it has since the 2012 season. The Thoroughbreds have 47 victories in the past two seasons.
  • Skidmore won the Liberty League East for the second consecutive season and swept a crossover series against Clarkson to advance to and host the Liberty League Championship tournament.
  • Skidmore allowed the second fewest runs (231) in the Liberty League and led the circuit with a .967 team fielding percentage.
 
Ameer Hasan (Jr., P, Lawrenceville, New Jersey) – Second Team All-Liberty League Pitcher
  • Skidmore's ace went 6-3 on the hill in 11 starts with a 3.59 earned-run average.
  • He made it at least seven innings in seven different starts, including a nine-inning complete game on April 29 against Union and seven-inning complete games on March 12 vs. Wisconsin Lutheran and March 24 at Rensselaer.
  • The lefty surrendered two earned runs or less in each of his first three starts and six overall.
  • Hasan ranks third in the Liberty League with 72.2 innings pitched and tied for fourth having issued just 12 walks all season.
 
Trey Bourque (So., 3B/C, North Scituate, Rhode Island) – Second Team All-Liberty League (Third Base)
  • Bourque is an All-Liberty League recipient for the second straight year. He hit .325 in 2023 with five home runs, 39 RBI, 33 runs, and a .510 slugging percentage.
  • In two years, he has already reached the 100-hit milestone.
  • Bourque ranks in the top-10 in the league in RBI and doubles (12).
  • Defensively, at third base and catcher, Bourque posted a .965 fielding percentage with 58 assists and six double plays. He tossed out 11 base-stealers from behind the dish.
 
Anthony Petersen (Sr., IF, Gladstone, New Jersey) – Second Team All-Liberty League (Utility)
  • Batted .357 with four home runs, 21 RBI, 25 runs, a .509 OBP, and .571 SLG%.
  • Placed sixth in the Liberty League on on-base percentage. Is 10th with an OPS of 1.080.
  • Petersen registered nine multi-hit games, including a three-hit outing Aprill 22 at Bates.
  • He finished the year strong with at least one RBI in five out of the last six games of the year.
 
Brendan O'Neill (Sr., SS, Pleasantville, New York) – All-Liberty League Honorable Mention (Shortstop)
  • Hit .304 in his senior season with 24 RBI and 28 runs scored. He hit nine doubles to set a new career high.
  • O'Neill finished with three multi-hit games over the final four games of the year and tied for the team lead with 12 stolen bases.
  • At shortstop, O'Neill posted a .924 fielding percentage with just one error over his last six games. He played a hand in 14 double plays and tallied 45 put outs and 89 assists.
 
Danny Melillo (Sr., OF, Pleasantville, New York) - All-Liberty League Honorable Mention (Outfield)
  • Melillo hit .351 in 2023 with 43 runs, 12 extra-base hits including his first career home run, and 12 stolen bases to tie for the team lead.
  • The middle of the year saw Melillo hit safely in eight consecutive games at which his batting average reached .435. He had two separate five-hit games.
  • Melillo did not commit an error in 80 chances in center field. He also chipped in with three scoreless innings on the mound.
 
Max Mello (Sr., OF/DH, Hollis, New Hampshire) - All-Liberty League Honorable Mention (Outfield)
  • Mello hit .333 as a senior for Skidmore with a career high 42 hits and 27 RBI.
  • He scored 13 runs and doubled five times.
  • Mello tallied 11 multi-hit games including four in a row from March 24 through April 2. That streak of hot hitting launched a 10-game hitting streak.
 
Zachary Leiderman (So., DH/1B, New York, New York) - All-Liberty League Honorable Mention (Designated Hitter)
  • Leiderman finished the year on a six-game hitting streak to post a .344 batting average with 23 RBI, three homers, and 15 runs scored.
  • He had a pair of four-hit games including the first game of the crossover series against Clarkson when he launched a homer in Skidmore's lopsided win.
  • Leiderman reached base at a .412 clip and struck out the least (11) of any player with at least 70 at bats on the year.
