Skidmore heads west in road finale

Thoroughbreds to face Hobart, RIT on the road this weekend

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – One final pair of road tests await the Skidmore College men's basketball team this weekend, traveling west to visit Hobart and RIT as the postseason picture rounds into shape.

Skidmore (13-7, 11-3 Liberty League) will take on Hobart (13-8, 10-4) Friday at 7 p.m. in Geneva, then end the weekend in Rochester, facing RIT (5-15, 2-11) on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Thoroughbreds have locked in a playoff spot with four games to go and can finish no worse than fifth. Skidmore can lock in a top-two seed (and a first-round bye) with a weekend sweep. Last weekend, the Thoroughbreds split a pair of road games, falling to Ithaca on Friday before coming back with a win against Bard on Saturday.

In the last meetings between the teams, Skidmore defeated RIT 70-59 (Jan. 11) but fell to Hobart 64-52 (Jan. 12).

Edvinas Rupkus is on the precipice of yet another Thoroughbred accomplishment this weekend. The senior guard needs only six points to become the first Skidmore player with 2,000 career points. He's already set the career (1,994) and single season (594) scoring marks. This season, Rupkus is second on the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg. and has career-best marks in 3-point shooting percentage (.448) and free throw percentage (.882).

Noah Meren continues to lead the league in scoring (21.4 ppg.) and minutes (34.8 mpg.). Meren also leads the team in rebounds (6.3 rpg.). Chase Ta leads the league in assists (5.1 apg.) and has stepped up scoring wise over the last three games, averaging 15.0 ppg. As a team, Skidmore leads the league in shooting percentage (.452), second in free throw percentage (.742) and third in both 3-point percentage (.352) and opponents field goal percentage (.419).

Hobart has won four out of the last five games coming into this weekend. They sit in third place in the league standings, a game behind the Thoroughbreds.

The Statesmen are led by the three-headed monster of Colin Dougherty (17.7 ppg.), Jamal Lucas (14.4 ppg.), and Tucker Lescoe (12.6 ppg.). Edens Fleurizard (9.1 ppg.) leads the team in rebounds (7.3 rpg.) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg.).

RIT is on the outside looking in at the playoff race, but is still alive for the sixth seed. The Tigers split a pair of games last weekend, before falling to Ithaca on Tuesday by an 82-70 score.

Will Atkinson leads the team in scoring at 10.4 ppg. Jaymee Rosser (9.3 ppg.) and Chuck Okehie (8.6 ppg.) round out the top-three. Marcel Davis (6.2 rpg.) leads the team in rebounds.
