Middlebury, Vt. – Freshman
Tristan Thiebaut of the Skidmore College men's tennis team earned a trip to the semifinals, leading the Thoroughbreds as they begin the 2018-19 campaign at the Middlebury Invite, held at the Nelson and Proctor Courts Saturday afternoon.
Thiebaut, placed in the 'D' singles flight, defeated Bates' Wilder Geier 7-5, 6-4 in the first round, then defeated fourth-seeded Akash Verma of Tufts in three sets, 7-6, 1-6, 10-5. He will face Middlebury's Zachary Hilty in the semifinals.
Other winners include junior
Jack McClaren, who defeated RPI's Victor Stouanov in the 'C' flight first round in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Noah Williamson and junior
JT Wynne would also grab victories, playing in the 'A' flight. Williamson defeated Josh Quijano of Bates in the first round, 6-4, 3-6 (8). Wynne was leading Sumukh Pathi of Colby by a 7-6 (3), 4-2 score, before Pathi retired. Both Williamson and Wynne fell in the quarterfinal.
In doubles action, the pair of juniors McClaren and
Jason Keye defeated Ben Biswas and Ethan Bershtein of Tufts by an 8-5 score in the 'A' flight, before falling to Bates' Quijano and Nick Glover in the quarterfinal, 8-4. Sophomore
Kevin Ha and freshman
Connor Biernat also picked up a doubles victory, defeating second-seeded Stanley Morris and Deividas Vilys of Middlebury 8-1 in the 'B' flight.
The Thoroughbreds will wrap up play at the Middlebury Invite on Sunday.
