ITHACA, N.Y. – Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Kyle Lundberg swung the momentum back in Skidmore's favor, and first-year
Ege Topbas closed it out as the Skidmore College men's tennis team won the Liberty League title match, 4-3, over Vassar College on Sunday.
- Skidmore, ranked 24th nationally, claims the Liberty League's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next weekend. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at 12:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
- The championship is Skidmore's 16th overall and first since 2021. It is also the first under head coach AJ Nelson.
- The doubles point proved vital, as Skidmore headed into singles up 1-0.
- Vassar claimed each of the first three singles decisions, but Lundberg swung momentum right back with a clutch 7-5, 7-5 win over Fernando Bauermeister to pull the Thoroughbreds to within one with two tight matches still going on.
- Radin Sadeghi knotted it up at three with a three-set triumph (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) at fifth singles over Jonas Santos.
- Then, Topbas got a break in the last game to take the third set, 6-4, over Junchen Jia in the No. 4 match to clinch the championship for Skidmore.
- Vassar, ranked 24th, is unlikely to receive one of the nine at-large bids up for grabs. The Brewers end their season 15-6 after having their 11-match win streak snapped.
- Skidmore will enter the tournament 15-5.
- It was the eight all-time championship matchup between Skidmore and Vassar. Skidmore now leads 6-2.
- The win avenged a 6-1 Vassar regular-season win on April 25.
