GARDEN CITY, Kan.— Recent Skidmore grad
Andrew Aikins has signed a professional contract with the
Garden City Wind of the
Pecos League.
The hard throwing righty recently picked up his first win in relief for the Wind.
The Pecos League is an independent baseball league which operates in cities in desert mountain regions throughout California, New Mexico, Southern Arizona, Kansas, West Texas and Southern Colorado. Pecos teams play in cities that do not have major or minor league baseball teams and is not affiliated with either.
Not a pitcher's league, Pecos features high power offenses are fueled by high altitudes and smaller ballparks. The average ball park elevation is 4870.
Aikins was a 2018 Liberty League second team all-star after earning honorable mention in 2015.
Moving from a starting role to the team's closer, Aikins thrived, leading the Liberty League with four saves. He didn't allow an earned run over the first 14.1 innings, finishing the season with a team-best 2.35 era in 14 appearances and 23 innings pitched, with a 3-1 record. He allowed just 19 hits and struck out 25 batters, with opponents hitting just .218 against him. Aikins finishes his Skidmore career with a 10-12 record in 40 appearances, with 99 career strikeouts in 152.2 innings pitched.
