Nick Fronte drilled an 0-2 pitch to deep left center to drive in
Ryan Strickland for Skidmore's walk-off 5-4 11 inning win over Williams College in a non-league baseball contest Tuesday evening at Castle Diamond
Â
It was the final home game for the Thoroughbreds (14-21) who will close out the season with a doubleheader Saturday at Williams (8-20).
Â
Skidmore nursed a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, behind solid pitching from starter
Sam Beck. Fronte's sacrifice fly in the second plated
Zach Bunker for the first Thoroughbred run. The Ephs tied it in the sixth on back-to-back one-out doubles, but Beck pitched himself out of trouble.
Â
Williams loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Beck finished his day strong with a short fly out to center and then his third strikeout of the day to end the threat. Beck went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. He struck out three.
Â
The Thoroughbreds took a 3-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh. Williams cut it to 3-2 with a run in the eighth.
Â
The Ephs tied it in the ninth on a wild pitch. With bases loaded and one out, Skidmore's defense saved a big inning when first baseman
Shawn Klier dove to snag a popped up bunt and quickly got the ball to Fronte covering first for the double play.
Â
Williams took a 4-3 lead in the 10th, but Skidmore tied it when Klier doubled to left field.
Justin Bottcher came in to pinch run and then scored on a Pat Geiger single.
Â
The Ephs threatened again in the 11th, loading the bases with three straight two-out walks, before
Jay Gamboa came on to get Alex Panstar to strike out looking after starting with 3-0 count.
Â
The heroics came quickly in the bottom of the 11th. Strickland doubled down the left field line to open the inning and Fronte took an 0-2 pitch deep for the game winning double.
Â
The teams combined for just 13 hits in the 11 innings and left a combined 22 runners (13 for Williams) on base.
Â
Will Potter reached base for a program record 27th straight game. He was 1-4. Geiger was 2-5 with an RBI. Gamboa got the win in relief.
Â
Tom Benz (0-1) took the loss.
