FIRST ROUND RESULTS
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Skidmore College men's tennis team began tournament play at the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday, held at the Proctor Courts. Teams from Middlebury, Hamilton, Tufts, RPI, Bates, and Brandeis all met, as some of the top players in the nation battled on a hot, sunny afternoon.
Three Throroughbred singles players and one doubles team advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights. In the 'B' singles flight, junior
Travis Leaf breezed by Max Zimmerman of Hamilton, 6-2, 6-1, before surviving a back-and-forth match against Jacob Eisenberg of Bates, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9. Leaf will take on Middlebury's Alex Vanezis in the semis.
In the 'C' singles flight, sophomore
Jack McClaren survived a pair of three-set matches to reach the semis. He defeated Middlebury's Adam Guo 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 in the first round, and topped Ben Wolfe of Brandeis 7-5, 2-6, 10-6 in the quarters. His semifinal matchup will be against Nicolas Glover of Bates.
Freshman
Kevin Ha also advanced to the semis, playing in the 'D' singles flight. He defeated Andrew Wei of Hamilton 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round and second-seed Rajan Vohra of Brandeis, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the second. His matchup will be Alex Kennedy of Bates.
In the 'A' doubles flight, the pair of senior
Steven Koulouris and sophomore
JT Wynne marched through to the semis, via a 9-8(4) victory over Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie of league foe RPI and an 8-3 victory over Josh Leiner and Josh Quijnao of Bates. Their semifinal matchup will be against David Aizenburg and Anupreeth Coramutla of Brandeis.
In other doubles action, McClaren and his partner, sophomore
Jason Keye, defeated Noah Farrell and Peter Martin of Middlebury, 9-8 (3) in their first round matchup. Farrell is the former number one singles player in the nation. Also, Ha and his doubles partner, freshman
Ben Maffa, defeated Tim Derby and Eyad Magori of Hamilton, 8-5, before falling in the quarterfinals of the 'B' doubles flight draw.
The Middlebury Invitational will conclude Sunday morning.
