SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team wraps up a busy week with a four-game home and home series against Bard on Saturday and Sunday. The series begins with two games at Honey Field in Annandale-On-Hudson, N.Y. beginning at noon on Saturday, and finishes up with a Sunday doubleheader at Castle Diamond in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, also beginning at noon.
Skidmore comes into the weekend with a 6-8 record overall and a 1-5 mark in league play. Earlier this week, Skidmore split a pair of games with Union on Monday and dropped a pair to Clarkson on Wednesday, all at home.
Skidmore is still one of the league's best hitting teams, batting .308 as a unit, second behind St. Lawrence. They are fourth in slugging percentage (.403) and fifth in on-base percentage (.381). Individually,
Will Potter leads the team with a .424 batting average in 33 at bats, with
Josh Brown (.395),
Steven Gilbert (.381), and
Daniel Dasgupta (.381) not far behind. Brown, Gilbert, and
Patrick Geiger all share the team lead with 10 RBIs on the season, and Geiger has provided the pop with a team-leading three home runs. Gilbert has also shown a great eye at the plate, as he is fifth in the league with a .509 on base percentage, walking a team-leading 11 times.
On the mound,
Andrew Aikins and
Jay Gamboa have had solid starts to the season. Gamboa leads the team with a 1.84 ERA, going 2-1 in 14.2 innings pitched. In his last start against Union, Gamboa dominated, pitching seven shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts in a 3-0 victory on Monday. He earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week for his effort on the mound. Aikins is also off to a 2-1 start in three starts, posting a 2.61 ERA and striking out 21 batters.
Bard comes into the weekend with a 7-9 record, going 2-2 to start league play after a split against St. Lawrence last weekend. The Raptors are batting .290 as a team and sport a 5.63 ERA on the mound.
The Raptors are led by Adam Carafotes, who leads the team with a .410 batting average. He also leads the league in doubles (seven) and triples (three). Chris Blake is batting a scorching .550, albeit in six games and 20 at-bats. Dillon Daine (.370) and Matt Lasky (.333) have also had great starts at the plate. Preston Gittelson is the team leader with 11 RBIs.
On the mound, Evan Richardson leads the pitching staff with a 2.95 ERA and a 1-2 record in four starts and 21.1 innings pitched. Frank Ortega holds a team-leading 1.56 ERA, going 2-0 in a pair of starts.
Last season, Skidmore took three of four games against Bard, outscoring the Raptors 26-16.
