SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team hits the road for the first time in Liberty League play, heading north to face Clarkson and St. Lawrence this weekend. Skidmore will play Clarkson on Friday at 4 p.m. and finishes the trip at St. Lawrence on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Skidmore comes in with a 6-3 record overall and a perfect 2-0 mark in league action. Last weekend, Skidmore opened the conference schedule with victories against Rochester and RIT on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
A pair of Thoroughbreds broke program records last weekend. On Saturday against Rochester,
Rachel Talanian set a Skidmore single-game record with eight caused turnovers to go along with a game-high six ground balls. After causing six more turnovers and grabbing nine ground balls against RIT, Talanian moves within striking range of a pair of career marks. She is one caused turnover away from the all-time mark of 122, set by Annie Ledyard. She also moved into second place all-time with 192 career ground balls and is 19 shy of the all-time mark, which was also set by Ledyard.
Tyler Phillips had a career day against RIT on Sunday, tallying a career-best eight points on four goals and four assists to snap the career points record, originally set at 199 by Kimberly Segalas. Phillips ended the weekend with 205 career points on 165 goals and 40 assists.
Talanian and
Cas Szwajkowski swept the Liberty League awards last Monday for their efforts over the weekend. Talanian was the Defensive Performer of the Week for her record-setting performance and Szwajkowski was named the Offensive Performer of the Week after tallying a career-high seven goals against RIT. Szwajkowski leads the Liberty League and is one of the nation's leading scorers with 39 goals.
Clarkson comes into the matchup as one of the league's hottest teams, with an 8-1 record overall and a 1-0 mark in the league after a 10-9 overtime victory against rival St. Lawrence last Saturday. The Saturday matchup against Skidmore will be just the second home game for the Golden Knights, the highest scoring team in the league with 14 goals per game.
Individually, Jaid Baytos and Kate Dillon are two of the league's best goal scorers. Baytos leads the team with 36 points on 25 goals and 11 assists, while Dillon is tied for the team lead with 25 goals to go along with four assists. The 25 goals put both scorers in a tie for third in the league. Taylor Collins is Clarkson's best statistical defender with 22 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers, and 22 draw controls. In goal, Samantha Gladd has started in all nine games, and she has a 7.75 goals against average and a .422 save percentage to go 8-1.
Last season, Skidmore jumped out to a 6-0 lead to defeat Clarkson 14-4 in Saratoga Springs on April 23, 2016.
St. Lawrence comes into the weekend with a 3-5 record and an 0-1 mark in the league after falling to Clarkson 10-9 in overtime last Saturday. In the previous two matchups in Colorado, the Saints erupted for 33 goals in victories over Colorado College and Champan.
St. Lawrence is led on offense by Kara Hurley, who has 15 points, all on goals. Kayla Schmalz is right behind with 13 points on 10 goals and three assists. Kiera Taussig is one of the team's best defenders, tallying 15 caused turnovers to go with 13 ground balls and 16 draws. In goal, Cricket Wemyss has an 11.11 goals against average and a .419 save percentage in six starts. Olga Lukas has an 8.73 goals against average and a .492 save percentage in seven games, mostly coming off the bench.
Last season, Skidmore edged St. Lawrence in Saratoga Springs, as a late Szwajkowski goal lifted the Thoroughbreds to an 11-10 victory on April 22, 2016.
