SARATOGA SPRNGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team heads north to face league foe St. Lawrence for a four-game set this weekend. The teams will play a Friday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., and will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader, starting at noon.
The Thoroughbreds (9-9, 4-6 Liberty League) got right back into the thick of things in the Liberty League last weekend, taking three of four games against Bard to shoot up to fifth in the league standings. The offense came alive, averaging 9.25 runs per game in the series.
Mat Marino led the charge for the Thoroughbreds last week, batting .435 (10-for-23) with seven runs, four RBI, one double and four stolen bases. Marino went 6-for-10, driving in three runs and scoring five more to lead Skidmore to a doubleheader sweep against Bard on Sunday. The senior is currently sixth on the team, batting .333 on the year.
Jacob Berish also had a fine weekend, frustrating the Bard batters in a complete game shutout in an 8-0 victory on Sunday. He allowed just two hits in the seven innings, striking out a season-best five batters. Berish improved to 2-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 3.09, with opponents hitting just .195 off of him, good for second in the league. Both Marino and Berish were named to the honor roll for their efforts in the last week.
On offense, the league's best hitting team (.321) has five batters batting .340 or better. Leading the group is led by
Will Potter, who is third in the conference with a .450 batting average.
Josh Brown is next at .385, and he leads the team in RBI (17) and is tied with
Patrick Geiger with three home runs.
Steven Gilbert is batting .370 with 13 runs scored and 11 RBI, and he's also the team leader with six stolen bases.
Daniel Dasgupta is batting .350, leading the team with 21 hits.
Hayden Smith is batting .348 in 23 at-bats and has five RBI and five runs scored.
On the mound, Skidmore is third with a 4.69 team ERA and is tied for the league lead with three shutouts.
Jay Gamboa leads the crew with a 1.99 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched, going 3-1. Batters are hitting just .230 against him.
Andrew Aikins leads the team with 24.1 innings pitched. He is 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA and a team-leading 23 strikeouts.
Spencer Anderson had a solid start in his last outing, allowing just one earned run in 6.2 innings pitched, striking out three in Skidmore's victory against Bard in game two of the Sunday doubleheader.
St. Lawrence comes into the weekend with a 4-11 record and a 2-4 mark early on in the league season. The Saints played their first home contest of the season in their last game, falling 8-4 to local foe Plattsburgh on Wednesday. The Saints are second in the league with a .319 batting average.
Michael LeFevre leads the team with a .436 batting average in 12 starts and has the team's lone homer of the season. Brendon Frank leads the team with 10 RBI, batting .379. The Saints have six players batting over .340 this season.
On the mound, Sam Downes leads the team with 19 innings pitched, holding a 2.37 ERA and a 1-1 record. Alex Black has a team-leading four starts, posting an 0-2 record with a 6.92 ERA. Louis LaCivita is the team's go-to reliever. In six appearances, LaCivita has a team-leading 1.80 ERA with a pair of saves.
Last season, Skidmore and St. Lawrence split four games in Saratoga Springs on April 16-17. Skidmore holds a 5-3 advantage in the last eight games of the all-time series.
