SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Second chances don't come often, so the Skidmore men's basketball team looks to make the most of its opportunity when the Thoroughbreds open NCAA Division III play Friday evening at 5 p.m. against the New Jersey City University at Babson College.  The host Beavers play Husson College in the other game. The winners play Saturday at 7 p.m.

Skidmore (19-7) knows the routine. The Thoroughbreds have won two straight opening round NCAA games only to battle the host school in the pod final. Will this be the year the team breaks through to the Round of 16?

Skidmore College Thoroughbreds (19-7, At-Large, Liberty League)

Senior guard Aldin Medunjanin and sophomore guard Edvinas Rupkus give Skidmore one of the top one-two combinations in the tournament.

Medunjanin is the only player to earn two Liberty League Player of the Year honors.  A multi-dimensional player he is scoring 15.9 points per game to go along with 5.5 assists and 6.6 rebounds. He is first on the College's all-time assist list with 537 and second in scoring with 1656 points.

Rupkus, the 2016 Liberty League Rookie of the Year and 2017 first team selection,  is averaging 20.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He's shooting a blistering 56.4 percent from the floor and 88.0 percent from the free throw line.

Other probable starters are senior Royce Paris (13.4 ppg), junior Jack Morrow (8.4 ppg), and either sophomore Jack Byrne (8.9 ppg) or sophomore Chase Ta (7.0 ppg).

The Thoroughbreds rank 17th among Division III tournament participants in field goal percentage (47.8) and have shot better than 50 percent 11 times this season, in addition to committing just 11.7 turnovers per contest. The team is fourth nationally in free throw percentage (79.5).

#24 New Jersey City University Gothic Knights (21-7, At-Large, NJAC)

NJCU is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004. The Gothic Knights finished third in the NJAC regular season standings and suffered a 67-64 loss to fifth-ranked Ramapo in its conference championship game last Friday.

The team is ranked fourth in Division III in three-point field goal defense (29.2 percent), 10th in steals (11.1) and 14th in scoring defense as they allow just 64.5 points per game. Senior Jalen Harris (17.4 pts, 3.6 reb) is shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, first-year Sam Toney (12.0 pts, 5.8 reb) was selected as the NJAC Rookie of the Year and graduate student Chinwe Wosu (7.2 pts, 5.4 reb) led the team with 45 steals on his way to earning conference defensive player of the year honors for the second year in a row.

#3 Babson College Beavers (25-2, At-Large, NEWMAC)

No. 3 Babson (25-2), which is back in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth year in a row, earned an at-large bid after having its 16-game winning streak snapped in a 67-62 loss to MIT in the NEWMAC title game last Sunday. The Beavers enter the national tournament ranked fifth in Division III in scoring margin (15.5), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (41.3) and seventh in field-goal percentage defense (38.1). Senior Joey Flannery (22.4 pts, 7.1 reb, 3.9 ast) was selected as the NEWMAC Player of the Year for the fourth straight season, junior Nick Comenale (16.1 pts, 5.6 reb, 2.3 ast) has made a school-record 91 three-pointers and senior Isaiah Nelsen (12.3 pts, 5.7 reb) is shooting 63.1 percent from the field, which ranks 15th in Division III.

Husson College Eagles (21-6, NAC Champion)

Husson won the NAC regular season title by five games and earned its sixth NCAA Tournament berth with an 89-67 victory over Thomas in its conference tournament final. The Eagles enter the NCAA Tournament averaging 93.2 points over their last five games and rank fifth in the 64-team field making 9.7 three-point field goals per contest. Senior Raheem Anderson (26.7 pts, 4.6 ast, 3.9 reb), who earned NAC Player of the Year honors, ranks fifth in the country in scoring, junior Mitch Worcester (13.9 pts, 3.0 reb) is shooting 51.7 percent from deep over the last 12 games and sophomore Justin Martin (8.1 pts, 10.4 reb, 2.3 blocks) has posted seven double-doubles and was selected as the NAC Defensive Player of the Year last week.
