SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team heads west this weekend to take on a pair of Liberty League foes. The Thoroughbreds (9-5, 4-1 Liberty League) will take on RIT in Rochester on Friday at 8 p.m. before finishing the weekend at Hobart in Geneva on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Skidmore comes into the weekend after a big 77-69 win on the road at Clarkson Tuesday night. Sophomore guard
Edvinas Rupkus led the team with 23 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field, adding nine rebounds, senior guard
Aldin Medunjanin tallied 13 points and two steals, and junior guard
Jack Morrow added 12 on 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
Statistically, Skidmore is third in the league in both scoring offense (77.0 points per game) and scoring defense (70.3 ppg). The Thoroughbreds are also the best shooting team in the league with a .483 clip from the field.
Individually, Rupkus, the reigning Liberty League Performer of the Week, is second in the league in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game, and in field goal percentage, shooting at a .546 clip. Medunjanin is 11th in scoring at 14.9 points per game, but is second in the conference in assists (5.4), assist to turnover ratio (2.4), and steals per game (1.9). Rupkus and Medunjanin are flanked with two solid 3-point shooters, as sophomore guard
Jack Byrne shoots it at a 44.6 percent rate and Morrow is a 38 percent shooter.
RIT comes into the matchup with an 8-5 record and a 2-2 mark in league play. The Tigers are on a two-game win streak after defeating Vassar 61-44 on Friday and Bard 87-77 on Saturday.
Guard A.J. Horde is the league's scoring leader by a slim margin on Rupkus, averaging 20.3 points per game. He also leads the league in assists per game (5.5). Forward Robert Aguilera, the latest Liberty League Rookie of the Week, is second on the team with 10 points per game, and leads the team with 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.
This will be the second matchup between the teams in two weeks. The last time the teams played was on New Year's Eve, where the Thoroughbreds handcuffed the Tigers' offense early on, then held off an RIT rally for a 78-72 victory in Saratoga Springs. Skidmore has won five of the last six games of the series.
Hobart comes into the weekend with a 7-5 record and a 2-1 mark in league play. The Statesmen opened up their league portion of the schedule last weekend with a 78-64 win against Bard on Friday and an 82-66 victory against Vassar the next afternoon. Hobart dropped their first league game on Tuesday against Union, 69-61 in overtime. Hobart will host Rensselaer on Friday before Skidmore comes to town.
The Statesmen are led by their two sophomore guards, Colin Dougherty and Jamal Lucas. Dougherty leads the team in scoring (13.8ppg) and assists (2.9apg). Lucas is second on the team with 12.3 points per game, shooting nearly 40 percent from the field.
This is the first meeting this season between the two squads. Last season the Thoroughbreds swept the season series, winning 71-54 in Saratoga Springs and 61-58 in Geneva.
