SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Liberty League play begins for the
Skidmore College men's basketball teams as it hosts Vassar and RIT this weekend. The two-time Liberty League Champions will start its title defense against Vassar at 4 p.m. on Friday, before ending the weekend against RIT at noon on Saturday.
Skidmore comes into the weekend with a 5-3 record, last playing on Dec. 10 at Middlebury. Guards
Edvinas Rupkus (16) and
Royce Paris (13) as well as forward
Marcus Jackson (13) all scored in double figures as the Thoroughbreds fell in the final seconds of a 72-71 score.
Skidmore has three players averaging double figures in scoring: guards
Rupkus, Paris, and
Aldin Medunjanin.
Rupkus is third in the conference in scoring at 20.8 points per game.
Medunjanin sits at
11th (16.0), while Paris is right behind at
14th (14.4).
Medunjanin also leads the league in both assists (6.4) and minutes per game (35.5), while
Rupkus (58.7 percent) and Paris (57.1 percent) are among the league's best shooters from the field. As a team the Thoroughbreds are a perfect 3-0 on home court this season and are second in the Liberty League in scoring offense, with 83 points per game, and lead the league in field goal percentage (52.0), 3-point field goal percentage (41.6), and free throw percentage (80.7).
Vassar comes into the contest with a 4-4 record. The last time the Brewers played was on Dec. 7, when they fell to Wesleyan (CT) by a 77-53 score. As a team, the Brewers lead the league in steals per game (8.5) and has turned the ball over a league-low 12.6 times per contest, sporting the best turnover margin (2.38) in the conference. Seff leads the Brewer attack, averaging 16.3 points per game. Fellow guard Jesse Browne is right behind him with 15.8 points per contest. Guard Owen Murray leads the Brewers in both rebounding (4.9 per game) and steals (17).
RIT comes into the weekend with a 6-2 record. The Tigers will head to Rensselaer on Friday before the Saturday matchup. The last time they played was on Dec. 10, beating SUNY Poly on home court 85-75. The Tigers are solid on both ends of the court. On offense they are the third in the league in scoring with 82.9 points per game. On defense they grab the second-most defensive rebounds per game (28.5) and block the most shots (4.75). Guard A.J. Horde is second in both scoring (20.8) and steals (1.8) per game. Forward Mitch Hermann is a threat from beyond the arc, as he is third in the league in 3-point shooting percentage (48.9).
