SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— In what has become an annual event, the Skidmore College field hockey team opens NCAA Division III tournament play on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a second round match against St. Joseph's College of Maine at Tufts University.

Ranked 11th in the final Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, the Thoroughbreds are seeded in the top eight of the 24-team tournament.Â

The 15-5 Thoroughbreds defeated the University of Rochester 2-1 in the Liberty League championship to earn their tournament bid. Rochester received an at-large bid and won its first round game, 2-0 over Shenandoah on Wednesday.

The Monks are 14-6 after upsetting #10 Montclair State 1-0 on Wednesday.

The other regional second round features host and third ranked Tufts (16-2) and 19th ranked University of New England (20-3) at 11 a.m. UNE won its first round game 5-0 over Maine-Farmington.

This will be the first meeting between the teams. Skidmore lost 4-1 to Tufts in the 2009 Round of Eight in their only meeting. The Thoroughbreds have never played UNE.

The regional final is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the NCAA Final Four to be played Nov. 19-20 at William Smith College.

Skidmore is playing in its 15th NCAA tournament and ninth in the last 10 years. The Thoroughbreds advanced to the NCAA Round of Eight in 2014 and had Final Four appearances in 2001, 2010, and 2013.

Miranda Davenport (8-4—20) lead the team in scoring. Defenders
Becca Halter (3-5—11) and
Marissa Folts (0-3—3) anchor the Thoroughbred defense in front of goalie

St. Joseph's is playing in its first NCAA tournament. After a 3-5 start, the Monks have won 11 of their last 12 games.

Freshman Libby Pomerleau (16-10—42) leads St. Joseph's in scoring. She has had a hand in 26 of the team's 46 goals. Defender Kayla Barry has six of the team's 10 defensive saves. Sophomore goalie Megan Baker has started 19 of 20 games with a 0.92 goals against average and .787 save percentage.
