Softball Game Preview - at RPI

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College softball team begins its run at a second consecutive postseason appearance when it goes on the road to take on RPI on Friday.

SCOUTING THE THOROUGHBREDS (7-11, 0-0 Liberty League): Skidmore split at Sage on Thursday after sweeping Cazenovia on Tuesday. The Thoroughbreds took the first game against the Gators, 7-4, and lost the second game 5-1. Junior catcher Mackenzie Whiting went 2-for-4 with a double, a homerun and three RBI in game one, while freshman Kristina Foley had the best performance of her career, going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior Cassie Fishkin got the win on the mound, while Amanda Carilli picked up her third save of the season, allowing just one hit over the final two innings.
 
Junior Dani DeGregory had swiped a conference-best eight bases this season and leads the team with a .382 batting average and three triples, also ranking eighth in the league  in slugging percentage (.569). She has seven multi-hit games this season, while Lauren Fortunato, who has a team-best 10 RBI, has produced six. Carilli has a 3.95 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 62 innings of work.
 
 
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS (9-3, 0-0 Liberty League): RPI split a pair of extra inning contests with Plattsburgh in its last series, winning the first game, 2-1, before falling 3-2 in the second game. The loss snapped the Engineers five-game win streak.  Senior Kristina Weltzin earned the win in game one, improving to 5-1 on the season, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out eight in eight innings. Junior catcher Taylor Ten Eyck powered the RPI offense, going 4-for-7 with a double, a homerun and three RBI over the two games and senior Jena Servidone extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a hit in both contests.
 
The Engineers have benefited from solid offensive performances this season, going 6-0 when producing nine or more hits and 6-0 when recording two or more doubles. RPI is third in the league with a .372 slugging percentage and a .366 on-base percentage. The Engineers have also been able to lean on their pitching staff, which has held its opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of 12 games and ranks second in the conference with a team ERA of 2.12.
 
A 2014 All-Liberty League Honorable Mention, Ten Eyck has continued to excel in her junior season. Her 14 RBI are the second-most in the league and she sits fifth in slugging percentage (.643) and hits (18) and ranks sixth in batting average (.429). She has seven multiple hit and three multiple RBI games this season.

Stephanie Caudle has been the team's top performer on the mound. She holds a  league-best 0.90 ERA and has limited opponents to a .167 batting average, which is also tops in the conference, while her 9.8 strikeouts per seven innings rank 18th in Division III.
