ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Natalie Mayne, who two innings earlier hit a game-tying home run, lined into an unassisted, game-ending double play to third base as St. Lawrence walked away with a 6-4 playoff-opening win over the Skidmore College softball team on Thursday morning.
- The single-elimination play-in win has the Saints advancing to the double-elimination phase of the tournament hosted by the University of Rochester.
- Skidmore's season is over. The Thoroughbreds finished 20-17 after making their first postseason appearance since 2022.
- The Saints took the lead, 4-3, in the sixth when Isabel Moreno doubled to lead off and scored on a Marina Juan sacrifice fly.
- SLU added two in the top of the seventh aided in part by a pair of Skidmore errors.
- Elle Harrison, who earlier recorded her 100th-career hit, led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Sam Waters also singled on a bunt, and they both moved up on a wild pitch.
- Lulu Mickle grounded out to bring in Skidmore's fourth run before Mayne stepped up as the tying run. She hit the first pitch right on the nose, but third basemen Allison Kloft made a reaction catch and astutely stepped on the bag to end it.
- Skidmore took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Sophia Finch two-run single through the left side.
- The Saints rallied for three, highlighted by a Juan two-run homer, in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead.
- Catcher Madison Bonham tossed out a runner trying to steal second to get out of the jam.
- Then, in the top of the third, St. Lawrence threatened again with the bases loaded and only one out. Mayne came in the circle in relief, and almost immediately got out of it when Waters caught a line drive and dove to second ahead of the runner to end the inning.
- Mayne retired seven out of the next eight SLU hitters before the sixth-inning rally.
- St. Lawrence pitcher Marleigh Monroe struck out 12 Skidmore hitters. She allowed four runs on eight hits, and did not walk a batter. Â Â
- SLU out-hit Skidmore 11-8.
- Juan drove in three, while Moreno and Leah VerSchneider both had two hits for St. Lawrence.
- Harrison went 3-for-3 at the bottom of the Skidmore order. Mayne was 2-for-4 with the homer.
- St. Lawrence will play its second game of the day against host Rochester, while Ithaca and Rensselaer will follow. The tournament continues on Friday, and a champion will be crowned on Saturday.
