Strong shooting leads men's basketball to 77-58 win over RPI

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-The Skidmore College men's basketball team shot a season-high 58% (29-50) from the field and 71% (17-24) in the first half in a 77-58 Liberty League win over RPI, Friday night at the WIlliamson Center.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 14-7 overall and 11-2 in league play, while the Engineers go to 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the Liberty League.

Aldin Medunjanin led all players with 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting, going 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Connor Merrill had 16 points and eight boards and Erik Sanders chipped in with 14 points.

Medunjanin got Skidmore out to a 20-11 lead to open the game, tallying 14 points on 4 of 5 shooting, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. The Engineers responded with a back-to-back layups by Tyler Gendron, but again Medunjanin led the Thoroughbreds charge, knocking down his fifth 3-pointer of the half. Skidmore outscored RPI 20-7 over the final eight minutes to take a 45-27 lead into the break.

Skidmore put the game out of reach with a 20-10 run to start the second half behind eight points from Merrill and five from Medunjanin. The Thoroughbreds hot shooting continued throughout the half, finishing 12 for 26 to cruise to the 77-58 win. RPI's Josh Dugas produced 11 second-half points, going 5 for 6 from the field, while the Engineers shot 52.0% (13-25) as a team in the stanza.

Dugas finished with a team-high 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Tyler Gendron had 13 points and Chase Almond added 10 points.

"I was really pleased with our execution and attention to detail early on," said Skidmore head coach Joe Burke. "I thought the guys played with great energy and we were able to get the rhythm of the game in our favor. We obviously shot the ball really well which certainly helps.

"We talked in the locker room at halftime about winning the first five minutes of the second half and we did that pretty effectively. I thought our bench gave us good minutes tonight and it was nice to get a lot of guys some minutes. We will get rest and get ready for Union tomorrow, which is always a tough game."
