Women's soccer falls in home opener

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's soccer team was upended by Farmingdale St., 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field in nonleague play.

Rams (1-1-1) freshman forward Taylor Howard gave Farmingdale the only lead it would need 4:44 into regulation. Andrea Kiefer played Howard through with perfectly weighted free kick over the back of the Skidmore defense and Howard made no mistake on the finish, lobbing home a shot from 18 yards.

Ashlee Thompson nearly doubled the Rams lead five minutes later, blasting a long range shot off the crossbar. The Thoroughbreds (0-3) came close off a corner midway through the first half, but Farmingdale goalkeeper Brenna Blair made a quick reaction to deny Lauren Alexander's headed attempt at goal.

Skidmore controlled the majority of play in the second half, but it could not create the chance it needed. Arena Manning tested Blair with a left footed strike in the 61st minute, but again the Rams goalkeeper was up to the challenge, preserving the shutout and the 1-0 win.

Blair turned away five shots in the win, while Thoroughbreds goalkeeper Madison Plummer made two saves. Skidmore owned an 8-7 edge in shots and had a 4-0 advantage in corners.

The Thoroughbreds go on the road to face Oneonta St. at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.
