Women's lacrosse held off by Union

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Skidmore College women's lacrosse junior midfielder Spencer Morgan netted a season-high four goals, but it was not enough, as the Thoroughbreds dropped a closely fought contest to Union College, 12-9, Friday evening at Wachenheim Field.
 
Skidmore goes to 2-7 (1-2 Liberty) on the season, while the Dutchwomen remained perfect in Liberty League play, improving to 3-0 in the conference and 5-3 overall.
 
Peggy Healy and Emma Olcott both scored a pair of goals for the Thoroughbreds and Allison Byrne recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist.
 
Morgan opened the scoring for the Thoroughbreds at 26:31, converting on a rebound from a Tyler Phillips shot. The two teams traded goals over the next 57 seconds, as Jessica Farland evened the score on a free-position goal at 26:07, and Morgan tallied her second of the game at 25:34 on a feed from Byrne.
 
Ciara Dudeck equalized for Union at 20:44, but Byrne provided another quick response for Skidmore, potting her fifth goal of the season at 20:12.
 
Union pulled ahead midway through the first half, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead. Jackie Hagopian tied the game at 3-3 and Maggie Comiskey and Haley Gould added a goal each.
 
The back-and-forth action continued over the final 13 minutes of the half, as the teams notched two goals each. Peggy Healy cut the Skidmore deficit to 5-4, before Hagopian tacked on her second of the game at 5:03. Olcott brought the Thoroughbreds back within at 3:49, dodging her defender and bouncing in a shot from close range, but Comiskey's second goal of the game gave Union a 7-5 halftime lead.
 
The Dutchwomen carried the momentum into the second half, increasing their lead to 8-5 at 26:37 on Farland's second goal of the contest. Morgan completed her hat trick at 23:53, but again Union was able to extend its lead, as Emily McGrail converted on a feed from Comiskey.
 
After Healy cut the Skidmore deficit to two at 20:46, Haley Gould and Sarah Rider notched goals at 20:06 and 18:51, respectively, to make it 11-7. The Thoroughbreds fought back, as Morgan produced her fourth goal at 14:27 and Olcott scored on another individual effort at 13:32, making it 11-9. McGrail put the Dutchwomen ahead 12-9 with 5:42 remaining and Skidmore could not find a way back, as Union goalie Jen Hughes made key saves down the stretch, securing the win.
 
Union outshot Skidmore 28-27 and owned a 20-18 edge in ground balls, while the Thoroughbreds had a 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Megan Kolopsky made seven saves in goal for Skidmore, while Hughes turned away 12 shots, including seven in the second half.
 
The Thoroughbreds host William Smith College at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 5.
