Men's lacrosse falls to #9 Union in season finale

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. --  The Skidmore College men's lacrosse was knocked off by No. 9 Union College, 10-3, in its final game of the season, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.

Josh Trachtenberg recorded his fifth multi-point game of the season for Skidmore with a goal and an assist and Quinn Hawkins and Seth Berger both tallied in their final collegiate games. In goal, Matt Diaco turned away 15 shots to go along with four ground balls.

Nolan Stauffer led Union with two goals and an assist and Charlie Ross added a pair of goals. Richard Gregory and Rob Santagelo both produced a goal and an assist. In goal, Stefan Basile made 10 saves in his 10th win of the season.

The first half was a defensive battle with both teams only managing two goals. Santangelo put the Dutchmen in front 4:15 into the first quarter, but Trachtenberg scored the equalizer with 1:43 remaining in the stanza. After Gregory put Union back in front in the second quarter, Berger responded for Skidmore, beating his defender with a dodge and ripping a high shot past Basile to make it 2-2 at the half.

Union blew the game open in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals. Stauffer opened the scoring 4:55 into the half, Ross scored on an extra-man opportunity and Jonathan Andrews tallied with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Stauffer and Ross scored 16 seconds apart in the fourth quarter and Paul Alberti scored from close range on a feed from Stauffer with 7:37 to play. Hawkins potted his 27th goal of the season with 1:02 later, but the Thoroughbreds would not get any closer as Union added two goals over the final 6:18 for the 10-3 win.

Union outshot Skidmore 41-35 and had a 44-37 edge in ground balls and a 9-6 advantage in face-offs won.

The Thoroughbreds end the season with an overall record of 4-11, while the Dutchmen, who will face RPI in the Liberty League semifinal, improve to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
