Baseball upended at Vassar

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College baseball team was downed by Vassar College, 9-3, Tuesday afternoon at Prentiss Field in the first Liberty League game for both teams.
 
The Thoroughbreds go to 3-7 (0-1 Liberty), while the Brewers move to 4-3 (1-0).
 
Mat Marino went 2-5 for and Josh Brown drove in two runs for Skidmore. Nick Petrella went five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while striking out three.
 
Brooks English went 2-4 with a pair of RBI singles for Vassar and Brett Zaziski went 2-3 with a double and a triple. Starter Joe Lovizio threw five scoreless innings and Adam Erkis did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
 
Leading 2-0 after four innings, the Brewers added four runs in the fifth an three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead 9-0.
 
The Thoroughbreds rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth, cutting the Vassar lead to six. Brown plated Dan Miller and Chris Lorenz with a single to left center and Jeb Clarke later drove in Marino, but Vassar closer Connor Cucalon managed to hold off the Skidmore charge, striking out three in one-and-two-thirds innings to secure the 9-3 win.
 
Skidmore returns to Liberty League action at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, with a home doubleheader against RPI.
