Tanner Brooks scored 38 points, but it wasn't enough in a 91-87 Liberty League men's basketball loss to RIT in front of a full house Saturday at the Williamson Center.
It was the final home game for Skidmore seniors
Quenten Howard and
Brian Moore.
The Thoroughbreds (16-9, 10-6 Liberty) finish in a four-way tie for second with the Tigers, Vassar, and Clarkson. After the league tiebreaker is applied, Skidmore is placed third behind Vassar. Clarkson takes the fourth and final playoff spot, while RIT (16-9) finishes out of the playoffs in fifth. Hobart finished first.
Skidmore will travel to Vassar for a semifinal game on Wednesday. The time will be determined Monday.
Brooks was 7-10 (70%) from the floor for the game and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.
Aldin Medunjanin just missed a triple-double with 17 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
Perun Kovacevic was also in double figures with 11 points.
Connor Merrill had six blocks and seven rebounds.
J.P. Reagan led a group of five RIT players in double figures with 21 points. He also had 11 rebounds and eight assists. Gabe Nicasio scored 14 points, while Brendan Reinert hit for 11 off the bench. Mitch Herman added 10 points.
The game featured eight lead changes and seven ties.
Skidmore took a 47-46 lead into the half. The Thoroughbreds scratched out a 65-59 lead with 10:37 to play, but RIT scored eight of the game's next 10 points to tie it 67-67 with 8:20 to play.
The Tigers were up 73-71 with 5:27 to play when they went on a 12-3 run to open an 11-point lead, 85-74 with 2:36 to play. Nicasio had a pair of threes in the run for RIT.
Skidmore didn't quit. Thoroughbreds battled back over the final two minutes to cut it to within four behind eight points from Brooks over the final 1:12 and a five from Medunjanin over the final 1:58, but time ran out.
RIT went 6-8 from beyond the arc in the second half (75%) and 14-21 (66.7%) for the game. Skidmore was 13-31 (41.9%) from three-point range and 14-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
