Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Michaela Soules scored in the 85th minute to lift #19 Nazareth a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Skidmore College women's soccer team in the final regular season contest for both teams, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds end the season with a record of 5-9-2, while the Golden Flyers improve to 13-3-2.
Skidmore put the pressure on early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead 1:01 into the contest on a Nazareth own goal.
Arena Manning took a pass just outside the six-yard box and smashed a pass across the goalmouth that caromed in of a Golden Flyers defender into the back of the net.
Nazareth came close to equalizing 24 seconds later, but Skidmore goalkeeper
Deirdre Walsh managed to parry Soules's strike from 18 yards over the crossbar.
Manning had a chance to double the Thoroughbreds lead midway through the first half, as she dribbled past Golden Flyers goalkeeper Allison Dobles on a breakaway, but Nazareth defender Sarah Conroy recovered in time to clear the ball off the line.
The Golden Flyers gained momentum in the early stages of the second half, drawing level in the 62nd minute. Courtney Malia collected a loose ball 25 yards from goal and blasted a strike through traffic and into the bottom left corner.
Nazareth continued to control possession and nearly pulled ahead quickly, as Jessica Barden sailed a shot just over the bar and Christine Belding's strike from 20 yards went wide of the left post.
The Thoroughbreds stood strong defensively, thwarting several Golden Flyers attacks until the dying minutes of the game. Kaitlyn Sowyrda had a clear look at goal from close range, but Skidmore freshman centerback
Liz Forelle managed to block the initial shot. The rebound rolled to Soules alone in front of goal for the simples of touches, giving Nazareth the 2-1 win.
Walsh made six saves in goal for Skidmore, while Dobles stopped three shots. The Golden Flyers outshot the Thoroughbreds 17-6, including an 11-1 edge in the second half.
