Skidmore outlasts Hobart in 72-66 double OT win

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College men's basketball team outscored Hobart 9-3 in the second overtime for a 72-66 Liberty League win, Saturday at the Williamson Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Statesmen are 7-4 and 1-1.
 
Tanner Brooks led all scorers with 20 points to go along with four assists and three steals for the Thoroughbreds. Perun Kovacevic added 15 points and four blocks. Connor Merrill had his third double/double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Erik Sanders contributed 14 points, three assists and four steals.
 
For Hobart, Connor Rehbaum led four players in double figures with 18 points. Richie Bonney played all 50 minutes and had a double/double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Hoy scored 12 points and Joe Gibbons had 11 points and four assists.
 
Both teams relied heavily on their starters. Bench scoring accounted for just eight of the game's 138 total points.
 
Hobart forced overtime when Pete Drescher scored with :08 left in regulation to tie the game 61-61. Brooks had a good look at the buzzer for Skidmore, but his shot rattled off the rim.
 
Neither team could manage a field goal in the first overtime as the starters gutted it out for both teams.  Skidmore took a 63-61 lead on a pair of Kovacevic free throws at the 4:07 mark. Gibbons responded with a pair of his own with 3:51 left. That would be it for the first overtime scoring.
 
In the second overtime, Hoy gave the Statesmen a brief 66-65 lead with a three-pointer with 3:45 to play. That would be Hobart's lone field goal in the two overtimes and final points of the game. Skidmore scored the next seven points for the 72-66 win. 
 
Brooks scored six of the Thoroughbred's nine points in the final OT, going a perfect 4-4 from the line in the final stanza and 8-8 for the game.
 
Skidmore shot 41.5% for the game, despite going 3-25 (12%) from three-point range.  Hobart shot 37.1 percent after going 1-13 (7.7%) in the overtime sessions.
 
The Thoroughbreds are home on Jan. 17 to face Rensselaer at 8 p.m.
